Gee, it sure seems like a helpful, straightforward, informative article like this one would have been great to have before the election. Instead, we get this after the election, when it's too late to do anything about it. Great job keeping the public informed, guys.

Make America Great Again, that's include farmer, right?

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

bye bye small farmers.

elon gonna fire 1/3 of government employees, too. that’ll really help the economy… more people with no money to pay mortgages, rents, car payments or buy a damn hamburger.

Tech and chip sanctions are promoting Chinese domestic chip manufacture. These tariffs will force China to become fully independent of US markets. This will take away the ability of the US to apply pressure on China. BRICS nations may follow suit, aligning their interests.

The tech sanctions are particularly bad for the US, long term. The USG may have had back door access to other nations' systems via US operating systems and software for decades. Pushing China on to domestic alternatives like Harmony will erase that back door access.

More of a concern (and not just to farmers) may be a loss of migrant labour - a US Brexit. Then they won't be able to harvest the produce in the first place. That will impact a heap of sectors.

Campaign promises rarely happen and nobody knows what Trump will do. But anyone operating in the US or with the US needs to be aware that they may lose a section of their market at the drop of a hat. That means short contracts with lots of small print and good insurance. Be ready to pull out and shut down at very short notice. In the UK some farmers switched from produce to solar and turbines (food self-sufficiency has dropped markedly in consequence). That might not be an option in pro-fossil US. If you are likely to find yourself impacted by the economic Great Wall of Donald, you will need to act fast to prevent debts building up. Have a plan B, diversify your customer base, or sell up. Don't allow yourself to be tied to long term contracts and don't invest serious money in any area that may be lucrative now but have little or no future once Trump gets stuck in.

Sanctions and tariffs always damage those implementing them. Move your business away from them (and even the possibility of them) if you can.

Have fun! They voted for these clowns. Expect a circus.

The information and past experience was always there, but farmers, like the majority of Amerika chose a racist rapist, lying criminal, white man over a black woman. Nobel economists had already publicly warned that trump's policies would further damage no only the U.S. but also the world economy. So, now the chickens will come home to roost, and the farmers will be on their own. Oh, and don't forget he doesn't believe in climate change so be prepared for Mother Nature to come back to ravage your crops on top of the economic hardships.

There's plenty of soy beans, pork and beef in Brazil and Argentina to just name just two countries. Sorry Iowa pig and corn farmers. Maybe Trump will send you a check before the next election.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

The farmers will be hit again by Trump's tariffs.

Did you needed an article to tell you that trump is a fraud? Really?

Though I somewhat agree with your statement, shouldn't it be a good thing to lower the cost of government spending through elimination of futile workers? There are regular people out there grinding day in and day out that are taxed to the brink and that money ends up in the pockets of many civil servants that bring little to no value to the table by either doing meaningless tasks or by doing essentially nothing.

This is the same for Japan too, I wish we could cut many of those people and pay more towards our firefighters, etc. The fact that some cities in Japan still build new city ward offices with shiny buildings and new equipment baffles me. Meanwhile, we have regular people struggling to reform their home's exterior that aren't built to last very long.

I listen to those who have changed their careers from a competitive market to become a civil servant, and they all are shocked at how unambitious and zombified everyone is. No one brings new ideas to the table, they want to keep the same structure despite all the inefficiencies. They also create new meaningless tasks if they see someone has the time to do so.

Let's face it, we are moving into the age of automation and pretty much many of those jobs can be automated easily. It's better we cut them now so that they have enough time to re-skill and try to learn in a completely new business environment. I agree that we should not cut them and leave them hanging there because as you've mentioned, they have lives too and they need to make payments. A new program should be in place for those who are going to be affected by automation, a vocational school type program where it will be accessible for those who are looking to change careers. During this time, you will also be compensated for salary to help cover costs of living. Though I would like for something like this to be accessible to everyone, it can be exploitative if there isn't a proper preliminary screening in place. Also, to prevent someone from simply staying on this program to collect their compensation for many years, there will be a time limit for each program depending on the desired career, and if the time is up, you will have to pay out of pocket to finish the rest.

I believe it's never too late to go back to a university, it's just harder to do so if you need to earn money for your kids and pay your mortgage. It's about time we have some type of program available for anyone looking to improve their careers. Now I'm not saying my idea is perfect, I'm just throwing something out there to discuss.

The farmers will be hit again by Trump's tariffs.

They know this and they’re ready for this.

the only jobs out there now are low-wage, paper hat jobs. 400,000 people in tech have been laid off in the last two years and they can’t find jobs.

60% of boomers are supporting their adult children.

the wealth gap has not been this wide since 1929, just before the great depression.

Biden didn’t tell the public that, but with an abysmal 12,000 jobs report.

True

America better brace for higher prices. Going to get ugly.

trump unemployment rate : 14.8%

Biden’s unemployment rate: 4.1%

@bassfunk. FYI a lower number is better. ; )

You know why don't you?

https://nypost.com/2024/08/25/opinion/labor-departments-818k-disappearing-jobs-reveals-bidens-economy-lie/

Remember, that does not count the people moving back in with their parents, people retiring, and fudging the numbers with part-time workers.

@bassfunk. FYI a lower number is better. ; )

We know, after that low number was exposed 2 weeks ago to be a ruse, the left went incognito, they don't want to talk the adjusted job numbers. wonder why?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

you can’t really talk your way out of 14.8% being a good thing. Trump left the economy in the gutter, like all of his personal businesses.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

The farmers will be hit again by Trump's tariffs.

I'm sure that will be true. But unfortunately, some of these guys will STILL vote for Trump. There are some people who you can't fix.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

well, to be fair, the pandemic skewed the unemployment numbers.

everybody knows unemployment rates and jobs reports are illusions. people unemployed for more than 6 months are dropped from the count. it’s just new unemployment insurance applications. graduating seniors (who can’t find jobs either…) are not counted.

and 40-50% of job openings are ghost jobs, per hr people. they have no intention of hiring anyone for the job. they use the hundreds of resumes to gauge what’s going on with competitors, salary expectations and filling the pot with potential candidates if they ever do hire anyone.

or they’re posted to give the image that the company is expanding to maintain the stock price or justification for investment or financing, etc.

the boom-bust cycle is a historical staple for the fed. its mission, just like the boj, is only two fold - maximum employment and stable prices. but their only tool is interest rates.

the u.s. is not much of a market economy anymore. you cannot create demand, either it exists or it doesn’t. you can only control supply. too many hands are are trying to massage the market. and the stock market is not the economy.

warren buffet has pulled berkshire hathaway out of the stock market over the past year and put that $325 billion mostly into t-bills. a minuscule return compared to its historic return from the stock market. the question is does he see something afoot?

to get back to farmers, big ag is happy to drive them out of business.

Did you needed an article to tell you that trump is a fraud? Really?

I know very well that Trump is a liar and a conman; as evidenced by the recent election results, must of the American public does not. A lot of that falls on the mainstream press, which focuses endlessly on horserace and personality-based articles before the election, and apparently cannot be bothered to actually write about the effects of a candidate's policy until the election is actually over. Also, it looks like I need to put a giant "sarcasm" tag on my posts.

Who are US farmers??? China buys almost half of US farm lands......

Gross exaggeration. USDA records provide the best source of information on foreign-held agricultural land, although they are still incomplete and contain many errors. According to USDA data, foreign investors owned at least 35.2 million acres of U.S. agricultural land in 2019—2.7 percent of U.S. farmland, an area almost the size of Iowa.

Canadian investors hold the largest share of this land, at 29 percent, with the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom collectively owning another 33 percent. The remaining 38 percent is held by entities from almost a hundred other countries. Although Congress has become increasingly concerned about Chinese land purchases, investors from China currently own only a small fraction of this land, at 191,652 acres (0.05 percent of the total).

As usual, facts are a lot more boring than breathless conspiracy theories.

the republican held congress in 1930 passed the harley-smoot tariff act to improve the economy and bring in more money to the government.

not only did it fail to do so, it deepened the great depression.

another reason to eliminate the department of education. an educated population is a danger to those who love the poorly educated.

Trump is a Bonafide criminal, a serial cheater, a man that has gone bankrupt maybe more times than you can count on your fingers including a casino.

People voted for him, now the many ignorant individuals can go and pick their own food because there are no people to pick the fruits and vegetables. Or the other option they will be paying higher prices in the stores for their food and best wishes to see if they can see any of their money.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

because there are no people to pick the fruits and vegetables

If that is a reference as to what "immigrants" or "refugees" are expected to do, it could be considered rather insulting.
