U.S. weekly jobless claims jump on COVID-19, renewed supplementary payments

The federal benefit supplements rather than replaces state benefits - together the two can make it more lucrative to claim benefits than to struggle at a retailer or restaurant which can only employ 50% of its staff (or make all work only 50% of hours) due to government-imposed lockdowns or social-distancing rules.
