Trump says U.S. to impose steep tariffs on steel, aluminum imports

Good news! Trump is standing up for America, and standing up to bullies, after years of terrible far-left policy of Lame-duck Obama. Protect the USA, close off borders and restrict trade with China. PM Abe and Vice PM Aso will be watching this news closely, and expect an announcement soon with trade restriction and heavy tariffs against all Chinese goods.USA and Japan no longer needs trade with China or South Korea.

This is one of the few things Trump has done that I would agree with. By placing tariffs on imported goods that are manufactured in the country it secures jobs for locals. Australia did the same thing in the 80’s and it worked very well for the economy. However, the successive governments have slowly destroyed the tariff system and opened the market to cheaper foreign imports, which has virtually killed manufacturing in Australia.

Trump is an idiot. Even a cursory view of history shows that this type of action never works. Subsidies are a far better option to protect a non-competitive industry if you're intent on doing so. Now we're screwed: Hello, trade war!

Well, now we’re going to see a trade war. This is likely a move that Trump will come to regret quite a bit I think.

The country most affected will be Canada, which may upend the NAFTA negotiations and may end in a talks collapse if things escalate. China is barely affected, while SK is also punished heavily

What scum act. Anyone in the international steel industry knows that America imports all it structure steel. All the steelworks in America are out dated and needs billion to bring into the 21 century. So all the infrastructure which is planed in The Trump Government will cost 25% more to the American tax payer.

At present the USA Steel industry only supply the auto industry with cheap low quality graded rolled steel.

Why is the America voting public so dumb. It is because under the Trump addim they have turn into mushrooms. Keep in the dark and feed bulls**. This will not help the workers of America. It will only increase employment and profits for the Asian Heavy industrial Companies. Who are already supplying the USA market with it structural steel.

Let make America dumb is Trump the real mantra.

So you think the US should just rely on some other country to supply with steel, and when they feel like raising prices there will be nothing for them to do since we wouldn't have any industrial capacity on our own.  At least Trump is looking out for the American worker.

Alphaape: How did you interpret my comment, That the USA should rely on other country to supply its structural steel amaze me. You must be consuming the mushroom fertiliser that Trump is spreading all over the USA. I am stating that USA steel plants have to be drag out of last century old mill and renewed production to be able supply it own STRUCTURAL STEEL. USA has mills unable to produce the products need. So 25% tariff will not deter USA construction companies from buy a imported steel because the USA can not produce the goods. Labour cost have restrict investment by USA Companies to renew their steel mills.

Plus USA have to import the iron ore need from Australia. Will Trump new law place tariff on Iron ore ?

Go down the tariff path and USA and eat dirt. That will be the result of any tariff war the USA will start.

Make America Dumb.

Govt subsidized products from around the world, including at home, should be ended. Markets work when they are free. Kill off the corn subsidy. Add tariffs to subsidized imports to reflect the true cost of a product. And whatever needs to happen to block Uggs would be good too.
