Why didn't Yahoo's American parent company stop this long ago?

Yahoo Japan's parent is Softbank, not Yahoo Inc.

Softbank merely licensed Yahoo's brand and site architecture to set up its search engine site quickly, but it evolved separately since.

You may have noticed that Yahoo Japan looks like Yahoo of a decade prior, because Yahoo Japan site never evolved.

Very disappointing to learn this was in fact still going on. Japan leads the world morally at nothing. It can and should do better.

Ohohoo they were STILL trading ivory, officially without even claiming its for science purposes? Boy no shame for some moral fossils.

Now the Japanese gov't needs to do the same ... but don't hold your breath.

However, some traders in the country have been suspected of dodging the rules.

Dodging the rules? Is that a nice way of saying, are guilty of illegal sales?

It's just another environmental issue with Japan's name at the top of the list of offenders.

Yahoo Japan said Wednesday it will end the trade of ivory on all its websites from November, after pressure from conservationists.

After pressure, otherwise they would continue. Despicable, all about money as usual

well i don't think this will stop ivory selling since Abe is investing in Africa lately they will now make it like whale meat like they were saying that whale hunting was band for 30 years where it's actually been a lie and the whale meat have been sold in japan in the past 30 years so it's just talking in the news but nothing will happen i bet that if you can buy ivory anytime you want in japan since its legal which is really sad

About bloody time.

JEFF: Yahoo was split up ages ago, and Japan is practically the only country still using it as a search engine and business outside of simple email accounts. It is not owned by Yahoo Inc.

In any case, Rakuten got in trouble for this year’s ago, but evidently companies still allow it here.

This is appalling. They've been trading ivory all this time?

some traders in the country have been suspected of dodging the rules

A 1989 ban prohibits international ivory trading but the domestic ivory business remains legal

majority of items sold either from registered stockpiles or predating the ban

Something about these 3 things don’t add up. Of course traders are breaking the rules. There is no way the current stockpile is from 1989 or 1990. Also, if that were the case, how many elephants were killed to get such an enormous stockpile?

Note that the pressure is not from the Japanese government but conservationists. Does this mean Yahoo! was not breaking any laws? If not, where is the law enforcement on ivory smuggle via Yahoo! ?

From Japan joining the Washington Treaty in 1981 to the actual ban on 1990, Japan imported 2006 tons. This is recorded in CITES trade data base.

Two more special import permits were granted by Washington Treaty Conference totaling 89 tons.

Did not know that. Always considered Yahoo an also ran and so never paid any attention to ownership.

Buying and selling ivory products within Japan is not illegal. Ivory inventory in Japan was obtained legally as per my post above. What’s happening here is the since China has outlawed it, there are Chinese nationals who are buying this from Japan and trying to smuggle it into China.

What about all those beautiful carved ivory art pieces?
