Beef bowl chain operator Yoshinoya Holdings plans to raise the price of its standard gyudon bowl from 280 yen to 300 yen April 1 in line with the 3% increase in the consumption tax.
However, the 20-yen increase is more than 3%. Sankei Shimbun quoted a Yoshinoya spokesperson as saying that the price hike reflects the rising cost of ingredients and a weak yen.
Both Gyudon Omori and Tokumori will go up by 20 yen, costing 460 yen and 560 yen respectively.

I bet the lunchtime lines at Yoshinoya get a bit shorter from April 1.

Gee, I hope that extra 5 yen doesn't keep anyone from eating.
Utrack

TOKYO -- A Japanese fast-food chain has announced plans to grow rice and vegetables on a farm 60 miles from the crippled Fukushima power plant, site of the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986.
Yoshinoya Holdings, which sells "gyudon'', or stewed beef over rice, has formed a joint-venture with local farmers to grow onions, cabbage and rice for use in outlets across the country.

Wasn't there a news article on here saying that Yoshinoya was reducing the cost of their ingredients by strictly using Fukushima ingredients?

This is just poor public relations.
Fine, if costs are rising, then they're justified in raising prices, but doing it at the same time as a tax increase is bound to attract accusations of "slipping" price increases past customers, just like umbrella suggests.

The price of Gyudon in Hong Kong's Yoshinoya is climbing a lot faster - they should be happy with what they do have.

Not really a fan of Yoshinoya, but 300 yen is pretty good value.

Real inflation is likely to head into the 5% ~ 10% range. Recession Chapter 3 in the ongoing saga of dumb economics in Japan.

Just great. Large corporations are giving salary increases of 0.1% and this is supposed to tide their employees over the 3% higher sales tax in April and pay for gyudon? By the way, didn't Yoshinoya say that it is using Fukushima grains for their noodles? Higher prices, slow death.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is what will these companies do when the tax is increased to 10%.

Cheap meat - tendons are probably what you're eating. I'm craving a bowl now actually...

Sukiya is so much better anyways...

All companies are going to take the chance to slip price increases in along with the tax increase. Good job the Japanese never complain.

When restaurants increase prices, they also often decrease the amount of food and/or quality.
But fast food gyudon is pretty nasty anyway. As long as tendon chain Tenya doesn't increase prices, I'll be a happy camper.
