1-year-old girl seriously injured after being hit by car driven by 91-year-old man

Obviously he's senile if he can't even remember he has valid license. With excellent public transportation system, there's no excuse for this man to be driving. Should have mandatory driver's license renewal testing (starting at certain age) for physical (emphasis on eye sight and reflex) and mental competency. If the person fails then responsibility should be on family for not keeping these seniors, who are prohibited from driving still on the road. If the child dies, mother will be living with guilt for the rest of her life. That in itself would be her punishment.

Promoter said you have to have drivers' license to own.

This is a new one. Usually they have the license MISTAKENLY while causing incidents, and this one is quite, quite older than the average old entitled person operating complex machinery. Either way, this one is a crime, either willful or simply a mental deterioration result. I would have also liked to blame the officials for not doing something to prevent people obviously unable and legally disallowed to drive cars, but then I though two irresponsible people is mighty enough.

I know he is an old man, but he needs to be jailed for driving without a license and for negligence resulting in serious injury. If it can be proven that he is not mentally fit, then the family who allowed him to get in the car, with the keys, needs to be charged in lieu of the man. You can't argue old people need to have their licenses taken away on this one -- his was gone.

The old man surely deserves blame for driving without a license. Unknown however, is the exact scenario in this case. Especially since he didn’t even realize the contact having taken place. A supposedly reckless driver and surely careless mother did her in.

Just hope she pulls through.

Japan is a safe place with regard to gun deaths because of strict regulations. It is a lethal place because of this country’s laxity in regulating drivers.

The old man who hit that poor little girl apparently could not remember that his license had expired; he claims he could not remember hitting the girl.  How did this guy get his hands on the keys to open the car door and start it up? He either had the keys or was given them. In either case he should never have had them. Somewhere something systematic failed. 

Japanese are bad drivers I tell myself when I go out the door. They do not stop or slow down for pedestrians. They speed, they cut in front of your car with warning and they tailgate. They text as they drive. The only time they are not complete idiots behind the wheel is when they know a cop is watching them. Unfair? Sure. But this is the mantra I have to recite on the street in order to stay alive.

Last night I almost got creamed. I thought the car in the distance would slow down. It sped up. It came with an inch of me, then swerved and cut in front of me as I continued to cross on the crosswalk.  So I will renew my mantra with greater vigor the next time I use that crosswalk, which I must out of necessity.

My heat goes out to that little girl whose entire life will be affected by that 91-year -old illegal and incompetent driver.

In this case the perpetrator of this accident was a senior citizen. But somehow medically incompetent people, reckless macho morons and texting housewives also get licenses. Cars are as dangerous as guns.

Not all, but percentagewise, elderly drivers are more cautious than the young. If the driver had been a young man, would there be any news?

I'm looking forwards to self driving cars. I'm hopefully sad stories like this will finally go away when they arrive on our streets.

No licence and hit and run mean the driver is more at fault.

The family are not blameless if the child was able to wander onto the road. I know many houses are directly on roads with no pavement/sidewalk in Japan, and many people live in apartments on upper floors, but that just means people have to be more careful with their children. It is not an excuse when a predictable something happens.

Careful out there kidz run wild in parking lots.

the driver offcourse, anyone over 70 has no business driving, especially with no license.

So, who is more at fault? The licenceless driver who didn't stop or the mother for letting her toddler wander around the streets?

Obviously he doesn't remember his license being revoked either.
