Police in Nemuro, Hokkaido, have arrested a 14-year-old boy on suspicion of attempted murder after he stabbed a 57-year-old woman at a shopping center.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 1:30 p.m. Friday at an Aeon outlet, local media reported. The boy stabbed the woman, who works on the second floor of the store, in the neck, using a knife with a 15-cm-long blade.

The boy left the store and called 110, saying he had just killed someone. The victim was rushed to hospital where she was in a stable condition, doctors said Saturday.

Police said the boy, who was detained outside the store, was holding a blood-stained knife. He told police he did not know the woman.

It's time for the LAW here to implement adolescence bag search on character profile suspicion. If he or she looks like hoodlum then chances are they conceal - no exemptions.

Needs training at the Dojo until he is a mature adult.

Hopefully this violent coward is locked up for a few decades. Just another no hoper trying to destroy other peoples lives. No right to live in society.

I hope the poor, innocent woman makes a full recovery.

Give him 15 years at a jail for adults

15 years? Give him the drop, he can't be fixed anymore.

So much aggro, so much hate but sounds more like a kid desperado.

I'll wager he's poverty line and below. He'd have to be a supervillian

to call the right number- the cops, fess up to attempted murder,

just to buy time as a patient, to hatch his plan for world domination

from a juvie 2x3 in 5 years time.

Oh I see it I see it. So mentally patient.

So tell me sherlock and freinds, why is it you never hear about "mentally" grannies and little girls

with the busy scissorhands and smoking molotovs, cuttin and torching up all the other womenfolk?

Is it a mental male female thing now? Just asking… cus you know- then again no, you dont.

Another mentally ill patient. And they're getting younger as well.

Well, if living here is so difficult for "americans", I guess they could just go back home to the Land of the Free.......

BTW, I'm American, been living in Japan for nearly half my adult life, (now 66), and have never felt any more restricted, monitored or otherwise had my freedoms, (those I wish to exercise), impinged upon in any meaningful way. Guess I'm just a pushover.

Poor lady, what a heartbreaking story.

I can't even imagine how she felt as he was stabbing her, must have been horrifying.

A call for help is a phone call or visit to the doctors not attempted murder of a random stranger.

What is going on in a society where knife crime is becoming a weekly occurrence.

In a country of 120 million, something bad is going happen somewhere every week. What do you expect?

Give him 15 years at a jail for adults and treat him like the adult he deserves to be judged.

He is 14, so nothing like that is going to happen. Some years in juvenile detention, that is all. I do not understand the point of phantasizing about draconian punishment.

Hey doc, what mental illness is that?

Careful how you throw around umbrellas terms you do not understand.

Yes, of course, we can compare Third World countries and countries where violence is considered a means to an end an argument.

However, the rising knife crime in Japan speaks to something very different.

I feel terrible for the woman. I hope she recovers physically and mentally. That 14 year old parasite should receive the firing squad. The World is a better place without parasites.

It is a shock that this could ever occur in Japan especially in a small town in the middle of nowhere. It is understood that Japan like Taiwan is one of the safest countries in the World where one does not have to always look over their shoulders. I would think in a small town like Nemuro and Wakkani, something like this could never occur.

I really hope the woman is okay.

Or maybe give him some help??? He is 14 years old. I doubt he is hopeless. It may be an extreme call but the image painted seems to one of that crying for help. My initial reaction anyway. For whatever that’s worth

"Very basic easy to understand concept in free countries."

J land is not free, highly monitored, controlled, biased, corrupt and too expensive for most americans especially now under the dollar recession & depression.

After many years in a mental health facility, "Youth A," who killed two children in Kobe in 1997, was pronounced cured and allowed to return to society (with a new name and identity). He published a book some years ago, but his present name and whereabouts are unknown. At least he has kept out of trouble. So hopefully the present offender can undergo treatment and be rehabilitated. Sometimes youthful offenders simply outgrow their hormonal imbalance -- or whatever caused them to act aggressively against a total stranger. One thing that's certain is that a juvenile psychiatrist will have total control over his life for the next five years (or longer).

Maybe the woman lunged at the boy, trying to disarm him, and so he stabbed her in the neck in self-defense? Probably not the case, but I've heard of crazy self-defense trials recently.

Did she have a weapon? Was she attempting to use the boys weapon against her? If so, it would be a valid self-defense.

Very basic easy to understand concept in free countries.

If that piece of trash isn’t convicted for first degree attempted murder and thrown into a jail with other murderers, the entire Japanese justice system is a sham.

But of course, he’ll probably just have to bow with his parents, and everything will be “ok.”

Good idea and also 5 years in jail for his parents for failing so badly.

14-years-old? I doubt they'll do more than give him a slap on the wrist.

Also, what is it with perps in this country calling up the po-po after they've committed a crime? It's a bizarre trait for sure. Why bother committing the crime if you're going to go immediately confess after?

So will they patrol shopping center after this?
