Police in Abiko, Chiba Prefecture, have arrested a 14-year-old boy on suspicion of attempted murder after he stabbed his 46-year-old father at their home.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 10 p.m. on Monday, Sankei Shimbun reported. The boy stabbed his father in the neck and shoulder with a knife and slashed his legs.
The boy’s mother called 119 and said her husband was bleeding while fighting with their son. Police said the father's wounds are not life-threatening.
Police said the boy has admitted to attacking his father but gave no reason.

Parents in general would only see their children succeed in life through a great academic achievement.

It needs to be acknowledged that Japan has a serious problem with how many in-family murders there are. Just about DAILY.
Sylph
Can't blame alcohol... Can't remember?

Looking at the recent news it seems like kids are fighting back.
Michael Machida
I never had children. Whew!

That kind of behavior can be caused to autism or mistreatment and abuse by the parents.
I’d like to know what the father did to the boy that made him react like that.
One of the reasons for the in-family murders in Japan is the attitude of Japanese parents towards their kids e.g. expecting them to stay at home as adults to look after them as they get old, never being allowed to move away from home.
Poor parenting is a big problem here.

”in-family murders Just about Daily “
Would you be kind enough to show us some data?
OssanAmerica
9 times out of 10 this type of case involves the victim inflicting DV or some other form of abuse on the child, mother, or both. And the criminl act is a response to it. This article gives no information other than describing the act.

AMC,
That was the general thinking few years back, "academic achievements" has nothing to do proper social behavior, in fact many well educated individuals have little or no well accepted social behaviors,
Mark
Sorry, meant to say AMS.

I wonder what will happen after the dust has settled though. Will the boy be returned to his parents? Will the father be investigated? I think like many issues involving family and parenting in Japan, the police generally leave it up to the family to sort out, rather than get social services or counceling involved. Maybe the neighbors or relatives know something? I'm sure they'll either stay out of it or won't be questioned about the matter.

...and I am sure you can name another population group of 120 million that has less crime. Right?
Mr Kipling
In family murders are very common in almost ALL countries. They just don't get reported so much.
For example in the UK 40% of women victims are killed by a partner or ex partner.
Mr Kipling
OssanAmerica.....
What nonsense. 9 times out of 10, 90% .... the start of almost every made up statistic.
Neither you nor I have any idea why this happened. As you stated the article gives no information.
Maybe he got fed up being asked to do his homework? Maybe he didn't want to eat his greens? maybe ...maybe.....
smithinjapan
Well, attempted murder is bad, but the kid is still a minor. So, give him a "tsk tsk" and make him and dad shake hands, then let him go home where he can be a productive member of society again.

Translation is wrong, a 14 year old cannot be arrested in Japan
snowymountainhell
Quite forthcoming @Mr.Kipling 7:00pm to openly address family violence in a home country when commenting on a case in Japan. In that regards, for the US, in a survey of murder cases: 1.9% were by their own children.
For the UK, you offered some “DV” statistics. For the topic at hand, do you have familicide statistics, as well?
Reason being: in the last few ‘Crime’ and/or ‘National’ threads, some Japanese ‘nationalists’ and expat supporters have challenged for foreign residents to ‘acknowledge their own home country issues’ before they can comment on Japan’s domestic issues. For example, @Eisennach has repeatedly ‘thrown down this gauntlet’ yet has failed to followup and respond with Japan’s statistics. It remains doubtful Japan’s NPA and the Ministry of Justice would openly acknowledge or report such statistics.
thepersoniamnow
Quite horrific, with serious family consequences.
Comments above are debating, but it seems pretty clear that there is instability, anger, mental capacity issues, and possibly much more at play.
Its unfair to label someone before knowing whats up.

Japanese Parents push their kids way too hard. Same with the teachers. Frustrated when kids dont listen and do the right thing. and yelling louder, angrier, and being abusive seems to be the norm here. Is not a surprise when a kid finally snaps. A natural human instinct. Pushing has its limits.
kaimycahl
Perhaps he was tired of getting abused by his dad. We don't know his side of the story.
Mr Kipling
Snowy mountain...
DV? well, I suppose murder is an extreme form of DV..... partner is often a husband, or common law husband.
As you asked.. In family murders are about 25% of solved cases in the UK. Male members more likely to do the killing. Rather disturbingly children under the age of one year old have the highest homicide rates.
Would be interested to find data for Japan if there is any.
UK data here..

It’s nice to see that when a woman is attacked , “we mustn’t victim blame, but when a man is attacked, we must victim blame...

This doesn't look like official data, but
55% in 2016
https://gendai.ismedia.jp/articles/-/71424?page=4
51% in 2018
https://president.jp/articles/-/40256?page=3
This article says 47% and 55% if including attempted murders for 2018
https://gendai.ismedia.jp/articles/-/71424?page=4
So about half a murders in Japan are within the family.
Definitely higher than other countries, but then again overall murders are low, so it seems about right considering how Japanese more or less keep to themselves.
William Bjornson
Let's ask Oedipus...maybe he has insight here...
Mr Kipling
therougou.......
Thanks for the links.
Murder rates are low in Japan but not hugely different to most countries. UK numbers are greatly affected by the recent fad of predominantly young black men stabbing other young black men.

Thanks Mr.Kipling 11:19p & therougou 11:52pm for your info.
Relative to *this story, looking for official Japanese stats on “children killing parents”, ie:*

Dad was probably a domestic violence expert and regularly beat his wife and son?
Without more information no real verdicts can be reached?
smithinjapan
kaimycal: "Perhaps he was tired of getting abused by his dad."
How do you know he was abused? I bet if he was "abused" it was that he's one of the growing number of hikkikomori addicted to gaming in their rooms all day, every day, and not paying a single yen into the household while they do so, eating all the food, not doing housework, etc. Who knows? I know you don't. I wonder if you would have assumed the same if he had tried to kill his mother?
Sanjinosebleed: "Without more information no real verdicts can be reached?"
Seems you already have, Justice Sanji.
Danielsan
Could be the effects of "cabin fever" from too much time in pandemic lockdown.
Maybe the kid has spent too much time playing violent video games; it seems that a lot of youth are reverting to barbaric savagery these days.
One day the truth will come out.
KansaiTen
Smiths Japan, 14-years-old would seem to be a bit young for being either hikkomori or in a position to contribute to the household income. Are you somehow surmising that he was finished with his school obligations at age 14?

@Sylph
IMO: someone should make a US documentary on it, and make a ton of money.
