Police in Ota, Gunma Prefecture, said Friday they have taken into custody a 14-year-old boy who stabbed a 12-year-old boy in the abdomen while they were both in the school gymnasium.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 11 a.m. on Nov 11. TV Asahi quoted police as saying that the 14 year-old boy had shown the younger boy his 5-cm-long knife, then threatened to "slice him open." The boy then stabbed the victim who is expected to be in hospital for about two weeks, police said.
The 14-year-old told police the act had been intentional, but has so far given no motive.

Speculation, but...I would guess the stabber will go to a young offenders institute and never step foot in that school again. The principal will be dragged over the coals by the board of education, receive a hefty pay cut, and be moved along come April. I will also speculate that this involved a notorious student and it was only a matter of time before this boy hurt somebody, proper. The question is not only how to effectively punish, but also how to better prevent.

But there are no real consequences for minors. One problem with the justice system in Japan.

Exactly. It is good to see the consequences that the suspect will face so that hopefully it can prevent future crimes.

Wow. Prosecute him as an adult if that is what he wanted. Then he will live to regret.

Here's your follow up...nothing will happen to the one who did it because he's a minor. The school will be sued by the victims parents. The school and the stabbers parents will then fight over who owes what percent of the "gomenasai money".

It would be nice to get a follow up on some of these stories...They usually fade into obscurity. What was the reason? How was it handled? What was the punishment? (probably too lenient, but still curious) Did they commit a similar crime again? I would rather get one full story with a resolution than ten sensational headlines, that fade later.

Ah, the nuts are getting younger! Let me guess, the motive will be, "I wanted to know what it feels like to kill someone!"
