Police in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, are looking for a man who stabbed a 14-year-old girl as she was walking home on Monday.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 5 p.m. The girl was returning home when a man approached her on a bicycle, Sankei reported. The girl told police the man got off his bike and suddenly lashed at her with a knife, before getting back on his bicycle and fleeing. The girl sustained wounds to her stomach.

A woman heard the young girl cry out and notified police. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of her wounds, and was in a stable condition on Tuesday, police said.

Police said the suspect is approximately 30 years old, 170 cm tall, and was wearing a faded black T-shirt at the time of the attack. The girl told police she had never seen him before.

Not safe to be a teenage girl

When this killing of innocent people will end in Japan ? It is really shocking and disgusting.

Way too much of this kind of thing going on here. Not too much of a vivid description and zero to go on to catch the guy, but if he is gutless and stupid enough to do this kind of thing I have no doubt he will repeat it. I hope he is caught before he can.

Japan is a safe country but its time to start making the people who do such crimes when they get caught pay long sentences. This guy if he did this for no reason at all he will do it again until he gets caught.

Time to pass legislation and local ordinances requiring minors to have some form of adult supervision to and from school.

Another day, another loser attacking a girl. Japan is a safe country unless you are a young woman or a child.

Absurd overeaction

Absurd overeaction

I couldn't agree more. We've already got a generation of kids who can't look after themselves because they've had helicopter parents, legally requiring this is just going to lead to a generation of adults that don't know how to think for themselves.

More children at the hands of motorist than random attacks. While it's a horrible situation, it needs to be put in contexts.

@Ah_so @Strangerland

You wouldn't consider it an absurd overeaction if it was your child who was stabbed or worse, kidnapped and butchered like that 6 year old girl in Kobe last year. In what alternate reality is it safe for elementary school children to commute to school without adult supervision? There are too many dangers lurking. There should at least be laws to require children under 12 years of age to have adult supervision.

Personally, I believe the problem lies with the glaring lack of mental health care and the stigma attached to it. If it was easier to get help, people would be more likely to deal with their issues before it boiled over into violence.

Strangerland, in Japan we have a generation of kids who generally have little idea of who their fathers even are and have spent most of their lives out playing in the streets unsupervised when not in education. There is very little helicopter-parenting here, although the suggestion of everyone walking 14 year-old kids to school and back everyday is going a bit too far.

Such a typical passing maniac. The girl seems to have been unable to prevent herself from being attacked suddenly. Um, she had close scrapes with death. It could have been worse.

Hope she'll get back on her feet soon.

Why is there a lack of a buddy system. It has gotten dangerous worldwide for our young ones to walk alone. Walking in groups greatly reduces the likelihood of being attacked and greatly increases the chances of attackers being caught.

Hope they catch the guy, but I doubt if they do. A similar thing happened to a high school girl near the main train station in my area (near Himeji). A man rode up on a bicycle to a girl in the morning as she was going to school to begin her exam week. He slashed and cut her a few times with a knife and then took off. He was never caught. The girl was OK but it's impossible to imagine how people get their kicks by attacking strangers, especially high school kids, like that.
