Police in Tsurugashima, Saitama Prefecture, have arrested a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of attempted murder after he stabbed a 53-year-old man in the toilet of a shopping center.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 12:50 p.m. Saturday in a toilet on the second floor at the Wakaba Walk mall, Fuji TV reported. The victim, from Kawagoe, was stabbed in the left calf, police said. He was taken to hospital where doctors said his wound is not life-threatening.

Police said the boy, who is high school student, and the man did not know each other and that the attack appeared to be random. The man told police when he came out of the toilet cubicle, he was suddenly attacked by the boy. He staggered out of the toilet and sought help from a shopper who called police. When police arrived, the boy was outside near the toilet. A bloodstained knife with a 17-cm-long blade was found on the toilet floor.

Police said the boy has admitted to stabbing the man but has so far given no motive.

Police said the boy, who is high school student, and the man did not know each other and that the attack appeared to be random.

Is this based on what both said? These initial police statements are not very helpful, and tend to incite baseless comments from readers.

Lock the kid up for life.

Will not happen. At his age, he will only spend some short time in a juvenile facility. And no, the problem of criminal and mental kids is not unique to Japan.

Possible he has mental issue. It is common for kids with mental issues to travel alone becauseJapan is a safe country. but little do those parents know how めいわくthey are to the public.

These types of random violent crimes are happening with more regularity in society.

Nothing should ever be considered completely safe in this world.

@ old man - "Happening more regularly"? Do we have to repeat this every time there is a crime report?

The crime statistics in Japan prove you wrong. Japan is becoming safer and safer with less crime every year. Fact.

I do not understand/This makes absolutely no sense. This is an absolute shock!!!!!!!!!!!!! Isn't Japan a safe country with extremely rare cases of street crime essentially with the same extremely low rate of street crime such as Mainland China and Taiwan??????

How would this single incident, in a country of 130 million people, invalidate Japan's status as a safe country?

Actually, I take that back. It probably isn't their fault.

Weird crimes again? Must be close to summer!

Japan is one of the safest countries on this planet, by pretty much every metric of safety.

I thought Japan (as well as Mainland China and Taiwan) is a place where one can let their guard down regardless of gender and size, walk around alone in an extremely dark back alley and never have to be concerned about becoming a victim of street crime.??!!???!!

Lucky they got him now. Hopefully he’ll be put under extremely strict supervision and medication for the rest of his life.

These kind of acts of random violence can be really terrifying, people reading about attacks related to other crimes or dangerous situations can still feel they can avoid them by acting carefully and not "getting mixed with the wrong people" but a random attack can make anybody worry they can become a victim at any moment.

Mr Kipling

Attempted murder? Not saying it wasn't but there are a lot of places to stab someone that would cause a greater injury than the calf.

There are at least three arteries in the calf that, if severed, could cause death from blood loss fairly quickly. (Not unlike the Femoral Artery in the thigh.)

Unless your name is Achilles.. :)

Achilles' heel was pierced with a poison arrow. So, anywhere would have probably killed him, due to the poison.

Lock the kid up for life.

The last thing anyone wants to do is converse with a stranger in a men’s restroom.

You have to be insane to go and attack randoms in there.

Let me guess, he did it just to see how it felt? Or he was stressed, so he wanted to draw blood? What other cliche excuse do these people make again?

Get this kid off the streets. Before he becomes a government politician.

Luckily the mental issues were discovered early ( 15) so society can be safe from this nutcase before he grows up to be a adult and does something more serious.

The shopping mall toilet is where I would like to feel safe, but in reality the wife keeps calling me to ask if I finished my business.

As if there wasn't enough to worry about already...

The last refuge--the shopping mall toilet--is no longer safe.

LOL, I feel really sorry for you if shopping mall toilets are the only refuge in which you feel safe. But just to clarify, the kid attacked him outside of the cubicle...

Hope they both get good treatment.

What the hell!!!

Seems to become a copied pattern.

Motive: stress. Which means, go and kill someone to make yourself feel better. Happened before, numerous times.

The kid obviously has mental health issues.
