Police in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, said Sunday they have arrested a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of stabbing his mother to death with a kitchen knife.

Police said the boy called 110 at around 7 p.m. Saturday and said he had stabbed his mother, Fuji TV reported. The 52-year-old woman was rushed to hospital where she died from stab wounds to her neck. A bloodied kitchen knife was found near the body.

The boy and his mother were the only residents in the house. He told police he currently attends high school in Kobe and that he stabbed his mother on his own, and that they had been quarreling about his studies.

Police also said the woman had fallen or was pushed down the stairs before she was stabbed.

he stabbed his mother... but gave no motive for the attack

A 15-year-old boy does not MURDER HIS OWN MOTHER without a very good reason...

The 37-year AGE DIFFERENCE would not help!!

The 37-year AGE DIFFERENCE would not help!!

Help with what? They weren't dating, they were parent-child. What does the age difference have to do with anytihng?

My god.

Well that it then. The age gap between me and my too boys is 47 and 49 years respectively. So I can expect to be stabbed to death when I approximately 63 years of age...sheeeesh.

So little information and so many senseless comments.

I hope the instition has a class on behavior skills. Obviously something is wrong with the institution for children to react that way. The news literally mentions a single mom and a son. What hardships the single mom had to go thru to put her son in the institution. Very sad.

According to NHK news tonight, they had a row over the son's study habits....

The 37 -year age difference does have a bearing on this case, in that he is emotionally on a tight-rope as his hormones are running wild at that age, while she is mature and emotionally well sorted. Very different entities.

And how does that have a bearing on this, and how would her being younger, and therefore if I understand what you are saying, less emotionally well sorted, have prevented it?

"So I can expect to be stabbed to death when I [am] approximately 63 years of age"

Not if you don't start telling your 15-year-old boys what they should be doing!!

Ashiya is in Kobe and one of the richest areas in the Kansai area. I have no doubt it probably had something to do with her stressing him out about school and studying.

they had been quarreling about his studies

Here it is in the original Japanese:

「学校の成績や生活態度について怒られたので口論になって殺した」

"killed after quarreling with her because of being scolded regarding his school grades and his attitude to life"

Maybe the mother tried to discipline him just once too often!!

Where's the internet sympathy for this kid? If a woman kills her baby and gets sympathy instead of outrage, why not in this case? It's only fair.

Maybe the mother tried to discipline him just once too often!!

And this would never have happened if there wasn't a 37 year age difference, right? Oh, the horror!

"And this would never have happened if there wasn't a 37 year age difference"

The mother didn't like his ATTITUDE TO LIFE. Duh!!

"If a woman kills her baby and gets sympathy..."

This is what happens when the baby survives to be big and strong. More please!!

The age argument is just BS, I don't know if the mother was a bad mother, the kid was just plain bad, or that the mother spoiled him until he went to high school and then start riddle him about his grades.

At the age of 15 the brain is not fully functioning. The brain is still forming into adulthood where reason is more apparent. This said, the boy was doing what he thought was justifued at his age. One might argue that video games and the knife culture in Japan might have something to do with this. It's very sad all around. I pray for both.

I really don't understand the "Age difference" comment. But this is really sick. One possible theory I could think of is the mother was always pressuring her son to study and go to cram schools to go the a good university and get a "good" job. A typical Japanese parent. Maybe the pressure was too much that he "snapped".

The thing is, parents should focus more on family relationship, rather that keeping pressure to your child to study more. This things could be avoided if both the parents gave time to their son rather than giving him mental stress..

Only the mother and son is the resident of that house, meaning the mother is the only one raising the 15 yr old son. Please do not jump into conclusion that the mother pressures the son, there are other possibilities that the son maybe reluctant to go to school and have failing grades and the teacher spoke with the mother and she needs to discipline her son. Maybe you are right too, but it's not a good reason to KILL your mother because she wants you to go to school.

@Giveme_abreak I'm not jumping into conclusions, I just said a theory or just a possibility.. But knowing this is Japan, its very common for parents to put their child in cram schools and pressuring them to get high grades as possible to go to a good university. Good University = Jobs at big companies...

There's something mentally wrong with the boy, unless new evidence shows any form of DV or abuse the boy is most likely not quite right in the head. Sadly this isn't the first, nor will it be the last of these kind of headlines.

RIP to the mother and the family.

"unless new evidence shows any form of DV or abuse"

Do you need someone to spell it out?
