17-year-old arrested for reporting around 3,000 false crimes

Police on Tuesday arrested a 17-year-old youth at his place of work in Iwamizawa, Hokkaido, for obstructing police duties by making prank calls. The arrest came after the youth made the latest in a series of calls to the Ashibetsu police station, causing an officer to be sent out to investigate a false crime. Police seized four cell phones from the suspect's home and found records of around 3,000 calls to police stations as far afield as Osaka and Okinawa.

The suspect has been charged with calling Ashibetsu police station to falsely report crimes around 2,100 times between July and August. The false crimes reported included a fight at a train station and a convenience store robbery that had resulted in injury. These calls prompted up to 112 police call-outs. Ashibetsu police said that in a single day they once received 532 silent, nuisance or time-wasting telephone calls.

wow thats crazy. 2100 calls in july- Aug?! he must have not had a Job & sat home pranking the police Everyday. you would assume that after 8 - 9 calls they would have traced the calls & caught the kid. Geez are JP Police that slow?! i wonder if they allow one "phone call" when they arrest you like in the states. Geez they should make a JP Movie about this.

I would hate to have to be the guy that has to sift through those calls...

How in the world did they let this go on for so long?

I'm sure the cops would LOVE to have ignored the calls. But then one call would have been a REAL call and the brainiacs here would all have a field day with the story about the cops not responding at all to a 119 call. :-/

That's 33 calls per day, for two months. What the hell were the police doing?!

Constantly answering the phone, I'd guess.

Ha ha!

bdiego-lighten up...people just enjoying a story for a change.

Guys, learn to read. A large number of them were silent calls, including hundreds in a day. The bulk of them happened on specific days, rather than every day. The article is also very poorly written and factually wrong by its own account.

I'd heard about this guy and tried to phone him in, but the line was busy.

2100 false alarm calls but only 112 call-outs.

The other 1988 times they were saying, "That damn kid again!". LOL

Yup, that's about right for the J-police.

For prank calls, yeah. Maybe in the states it's different. The kid would have ended up beaten by "off-duty" police officers.

Hasn't this happened before?

Let's see...2100 calls and he only had 4 cell phones. That's still a staggering 525 calls per phone!! You would think the police might think something fishy was up after the first 5! Seems like they were doing nothing and didn't mind the busy work.

Police officer A: Oh, it's that crazy guy again making another false report. Feel like going for a ride?

Police officer B: Yeah, sure. I don't have anything better to do right now.

So this is a nice way to use your 4 cell phones. He must be a lonely guy who want to utilise his cell phones someway. A costly hobby.

He tried to turn himself in, but by that time, they did not believe him.

Must be that new "3000 Strikes and you're out" law which was passed a few years back.

He's a "child" according to Japanese law...he will get away with it.

Don't they have better systems at the station to monitor the calls -- ie. where they are coming in from? They should at the very least be able to get the phone numbers -- and if the same ones keep popping up, get an order to the phone companies to release records of whom the phones belong to. Should have been wrapped up far sooner than this.

I hear the "Nippon Civilian Police" are looking for a few good punks.

That's a rather strange hobby... Did he find it amusing or thrilling? Or was he just very bored?

Obviously this kid has some sort of mental disorder. He needs help.

Amen. What were they doing for the 1988 calls?

@Disillusioned-either someone hacked an account or the moderator needs to get on the ball about the spam.

Funny! I was sitting here reading this article and an old Little River Band song came on random, 'Have you heard about the lonesome loser?' - I would ask what his parents were doing, but he is already asking the same question.

The police station does not have caller ID on their phones? I doubt he could call from 2100 different phone numbers.

Another false crime, you can't arrest a minor in Japan.

... I wonder how many of those fake calls resulted in someone being picked up, charged and convicted?

They should put him to work in the police call-centre

Dude should get a job. I hear the police are hiring.

Geez this kid really needs to find himself a girlfriend or something to get his mind of being a total pain in the ar$e. Annoying the crap out of cops isn't really a good hobby dude!

The suspect has been charged with calling Ashibetsu police station to falsely report crimes around 2,100 times between July and August. These cops must be so naive!!! You would think after about 5 or 6 false calls, the police would look into the situation to make sure the person that is calling is not just playing around. And to make that many calls in a very short time, this guy must be a weirdo all cracked up in the head.
