17-year-old boy attacks mother of girl from his school at her apartment

A 17-year-old boy dressed in a delivery worker’s uniform attacked the 40-year-old mother of a girl at his school and then apparently stabbed himself at a housing complex in Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture, on Monday.

The woman had bruises inflicted on the back of her head while the boy had a stab wound in his chest, Fuji TV reported. Both were taken to hospital and remained unconscious on Tuesday.

According to police, the incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. at the second-floor apartment belonging to Shuko Shibata. The victim’s teenage daughter was also home at the time and rushed for help from their downstairs neighbor, saying that a thief had knocked on the door and then forced his way in when her mother opened the door.

When police arrived at the apartment, Shibata and the boy were found collapsed in the hallway.

Police quoted Shibata’s daughter as saying, “A guy disguised as a delivery worker forced his way into our apartment.”

Police said the boy was wearing a delivery worker's jacket and a cap and was carrying a cardboard box featuring the logo of a major courier company and a sticker with the name Shibata on it. Inside the box were pepper spray, handcuffs, rope and a metal rod. A blood-stained survival knife was found in the apartment.

Police said Shibata's daughter and the boy had attended the same school since junior high.

Thanks for fixing my limited vocabulary.

Why does everyone assume the daughter/classmate was the target of his "affections"?

My guess...

He and the daughter had been study mates. He had come over to their house before, and her mother had always served both of them tea and sembei. He was smitten, but alas, his love was unrequited. So he flipped out.

The " statistics" may show a low crime rate, but what happens is often very weird. Mental health issues seem to be a low priority.

Everyone should buy one of those delivery boxes and place it outside their house. It cost like 2,000¥ on Amazon and Rakuten. And the delivery company workers should also make and effort to use those boxes rather than asking for access and requiring people to open the door! This will not only assist in safety but also aid delivery workers to make only one round of delivery rather than multiple

And you really think this is the solution for someone pretending to be a delivery person. There are also other jobs which people can use to gain access.

And some products cannot be left attended.

So I do not feel I should buy because of your statement. I could consider but I don't want

Another technofix? You do realize that you can not find a technofix for every imaginable crime, and whatever you put in place, they think of a way around it.

Wow. That nutcase was up to no good. Alas, he is 17, so.... the typical slap on the wrist only.

NHK TV ‘News9’ is reporting the aforementioned “metal rod” was believed to be a “police baton” and there was also a “stun gun” in the assailant’s ‘delivery’ box, in addition to the ‘pepper spray & handcuffs’. Where would a 17yo get such items in Japan ?

THIS is why we need to start charging these maggots as adults. But nope... can't name him, nor can he go to prison. Simple reformatory for a couple of years then he can back to finish off the whole family next time. Because surely the arbitrary date of when his 20th birthday comes is when he truly knows right from wrong. Until then, he has the same responsibility as a two-year-old, since they are both children.

He started obsessing over her in jhs.

She didn’t even know he was alive.

They are now in HS, but he still stalks her.

He must’ve thought the best way to get to her was attacking the mom.

And she STILL didn’t know who he was or remembered him from JHS.

Lock the loser up for life.

He’ll do this again in the future.

He must really have loved the girl to go that far…

He must really have been psychotically obsessed with the girl to go that far...

There. I fixed it for you.

"...perhaps he became so guilty he just stabbed himself instead of continuing with his original plan of abduction."

Incredible speculation!

Not incredible. Reasonable, based on how often people in Japan stab themselves after attacking others.

But, it could have also been the mother who stabbed him. There aren't enough details in the article.

Or, maybe it's the daughter who stabbed him. I'm just throwing rice against the wall, and seeing what sticks.

Too bad, expected a horror scene.

I hope the mother makes a full recovery - the piece of scum who attacked her... hope he gets banged up for a nice long time

Based upon the facts in the article, one speculation would be that the boy had a fixation on the girl, most likely unrequited. His plan appears to have been one of abduction, based on the contents of the box.

He may not have been expecting the mother to be there, and hadn't planned on actually stabbing anyone. But, after he did, perhaps he became so guilty he just stabbed himself instead of continuing with his original plan of abduction.

Let the speculation commence!

As would be totally normal after reading something like this, especially considering the contents of the box, and relationship between the attacker and victim's daughter.

Terrible tragedy hopefully the mental health of the girl is being taken care of, being attacked by a stranger is a terrible enough experience, the aggressor being known to her can make it even more serious.
