Police in Fuefuki, Yamanashi Prefecture, have arrested a 65-year-old man on suspicion of dangerous driving resulting in injury after the car he was driving hit and seriously injured a 17-year-old boy on a bicycle and kept going.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 3:45 p.m. Friday, local broadcaster YBS reported. A pedestrian who witnessed the incident called 110 and said a boy had been knocked off his bike by a car and was bleeding from a head injury.

The boy, who lives in Hokuto and was on his way home from school, was taken to hospital and remained in a serious condition on Saturday, after suffering a pulmonary contusion, police said.

Police said Tatehiko Kaneko was arrested lat Saturday after an analysis of street surveillance camera footage identified his vehicle. Fragments from a vehicle were also found the scene and matched Kaneko's car which belongs to his workplace -- a hotel.

Police said Kaneko has admitted to the charge.

I expected the usual "I don't remember" but he admitted it.

I wish nothing but a speedy recovery for the injured cyclist. But this must be said...

In a society where someone riding their bicycle in a completely irresponsible manner (not looking both ways, using smartphone, drunk, etc...) slams into your vehicle and then the driver of said vehicle gets arrested for dangerous driving, can we really be surprised that people are fleeing the scene? It's every driver's worst nightmare.

Accidents can happen, but you don't run away from the scene.

You stay with the injured person, you call for help, and you try to do the right thing when that happens. Even if you are PURELY being selfish about it, your punishment will probably be a lot less if you can show you tried to stay and help rather than run away.

I get it, you panic and run away, but that isn't really an excuse here.

The cops will track the car down although they won’t be able to confirm who was driving and if the driver was drunk. Hope the kid pulls through.

Hopefully CCTV can help catch the worthless trash who did this and put them away for many years. Expecting the excuses now - "I can't remember hitting anyone..."

Hope the poor kid recovers.

Hope they find the scum. My wife was shoved against a wall by a passing car, and as there were no cameras, the police said there was nothing they could do.

Coward; there are cameras everywhere. Police will be knocking on the door...
