17-year-old girl arrested over death of newborn infant

Police in Niigata said Wednesday they have arrested a 17-year-old girl over the death of her newborn baby daughter in July.

According to police, the girl, an unemployed resident of Niigata City's Higashi Ward, gave birth to the child on the morning of July 16 in the toilet at her home. NTV quoted police as saying that she immediately stuffed a large wad of paper into the child's mouth, and suffocated her to death.

Following the birth of her child, the girl was unable to stop bleeding. She emerged from the toilet and asked her parents to take her and the infant to hospital. Upon her arrival, medical staff inquired about the child whom the girl had just given birth to, and quickly learned what happened. Police were notified shortly after and waited until the girl had fully recovered before arresting her on Aug 18.

The girl has denied all charges telling police she doesn't remember anything of that day, NTV reported. Police said the girl's parents claimed they were not aware their daughter was pregnant.

Just once, I'd like a reporter to ask the parents, "How can you not know your daughter was pregnant, if she was living with you? Are you blind, stupid or both?"

Kids wear baggy clothes. How to tell if they're pregnant? Follow them into bathroom?

What a cruel, heartless, disgusting girl.

How can you NOT remember giving birth to a baby, and then ruthlessly killing it? I REALLY don't get why she felt she needed to kill the baby. Why was this necessary if the mother who obviously knew she was pregnant and gave birth.

Go to the hospital, get yourself fixed, and have a long think of whether or not you wan to keep the child. If you can't there are thousands of couples out there would give their left arm to be able to raise that child. UGH! The stupidity of some people is just so UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!

It's not surprising this girl turned out the way she did.

True, a lot of women, maybe even MOST women would find it difficult to hide a pregnancy however, in my case, if I wanted a seat on a crowded train, I had to try to stick my tummy out - right up to when I was ready to give birth.

That's so distrubing..I'm more worried about what the hell was going through her mind to do such a thing. Also the circumstances around her getting pregnant at 17. And it is possible the parents didn't know if the girl in question didn't have much of a belly and the girl didn't bother telling anyone about her pregnancy. Not all women look pregnant when they are.

The media in Japan invariably report whether or not perpetrators are employed. You would think unemployment itself is a crime in this country.

It's particularly strange in this case where the perpetrator is 17, and her employment status has nothing whatsoever to do with the story.

Japanese women's "bumps" are generally smaller than Westerners in my observation.

I don't know what is more cruel, the fact she killed her newborn, the fact her parents didn't know she was pregnant, the fact she was probably a normal girl and believed that was the only solution or, some of the disgusting comments in the thread.

17 and unemployed? why is she not at school? Why didn't the parents know?

Believe it or not but it is not unheard of for married women to give birth to children and not even realize they were pregnant. I have met women who were pregnant who did not have a baby bump, granted it is not common but I'm not surprised that the parents didn't know she was pregnant.

I have heard of cases where nobody other than the girl/woman herself has known about the pregnancy right up until the baby is born. It just doesn't show that much on some girls/women and/or some pregnancies. Especially if you go to great lenghts to hide it on top of that. Just like it varies with other typical symtomps like feeling sick, cravings, mood swings etc. It could be that this girl was shocked (and exausted) right after the baby was born and didn't know how to explain the baby to her parents. When the baby started crying, the girl tried to quiet the baby by putting tissues in her mouth, not realizing/intending to suffacate it.. Just a theory. It does not have to be more than a really unfortunate accident.

It appears that a baby bump is less recognizable than a bump on the head in Japan!

Brainiac, not all pregnancies are obvious. Some women stay quite slender during pregnancy, not invoking the slightest idea of being pregnant.

So she was giving birth at home but her parents didn't even noticed. I heard that hurts a lot. How could they not hear anything?

Gogogo, I find your remarks rather narrow-minded and offensive, have you thought that the girl might just be terrified? scared? a lot of woman are scared of giving birth, so why should she be any different? it could be that her one off boy friend is not there to support her, does even know about the pregnancy? may be here parents are narrow-minded, old fashioned, she could have brought shame on the family name, especially if she's not married, we don't know what the full story is yet, so please don't judge people instantly until you know ALL of the facts, yes its wrong to kill the baby, i agree with every body on that point. Gogogo have you got any children? was you scared? Iam sure this memories will be with her for the rest of her life, and at some point she will properly regret her mistake, give the girl a bit of slack please.

Looks like many are assuming she is a typical skiing girl. Maybe she was on the heavy side, a lot easier to hide. Born in July=pregnant at 16.

Must be terrible home to hide something like that.

Another "lost" child having a baby. Sad.

Brian Wheway: Sorry mate, no justification for murder no matter the situation. That little child had no hope, no future because of a selfish action. Doesn't matter what she had or didn't have, a baby is a human life! Deal with your problems don't kill babies because life is hard or unfair.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

very brutal of the girl to kill her newborn as soon as she was born, the poor baby didn't stand a chance, rip poor little baby :(

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Brian Wheway - I may be wrong, but someone even at the young age of 17 who is capable of murdering their own newborn child without a shred of remorse by stuffing paper in her mouth and suffocating her to death, and then is capable of claiming that she "doesnt remember a thing about that day" - not being pregnant, not giving birth, and clearly not murdering a newborn baby - doesnt strike me as a the kind of person likely to feel remorse for her actions later on. In fact, I would stretch further and say she is the very definition of a sociopath in the making. If she feels any emotion at all it will probably be relief that she is "rid" of the problem. I dont believe for a second there was no one she could have gone to with this, and this is a not uncommon Japanese way of reacting to "inconveniences" - pretend it doent exist, and then when you can pretend no more make it go away quietly. She is a murderer There is no excuse.

Wtf if she can't take care of the baby give it to someone and her parents is not even aware of their daughter pregnant it's like they don't even care or pay attention.

1 in 2,500 cases some women won't know if they're pregnant or show signs unless they go into labor.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

(Sigh) another case of "Kids having kids". Where did the sexual education and morals go? I find this situation really creepy and bitter beyond belief. And the question is:How did this happened and no one noticed or what is the real story behind it?
