Police in Seki, Gifu Prefecture, have arrested a 17-year-old high school student on suspicion of attempted murder after he stabbed a 33-year-old woman with a pair of scissors at a drugstore.
The incident occurred at around 2 p.m. on Thursday, Fuji TV reported. The victim had been shopping at Genky Drugstore. When she exited the store's toilet, the boy suddenly stabbed her several times in the head and neck with the scissors, and then ran out of the store.
The woman was rushed to hospital and her condition is stable, police said Friday.
Approximately 10 minutes after the incident occurred, the youth, who attends a public high school, turned himself in at a nearby police box and confessed to "stabbing someone."
Police said the suspect has so far not given any reason for attacking the woman whom he said he did not know.

Except when it happens to you, Strangerland. Whether you decide to worry or not is up to you, but the possibility exists. Not being a native Japanese, however, excludes you (and many others) from half the possible reasons to become a crime victim in Japan.

Well, this guy MIGHT get 30 minutes in prison. He didn't kill the woman, and was streased out because being a teenager is so rough in Japan, so he is off the hook. In Japan the sentences are not harsh enough. In fact he might be home today by dinner! Maybe this punk needs street justice, sinve there will be a lack of Japanese Gov't justice.

If you really want to see pain, try jabbing your own leg or neck with scissors about 10 times and then see what happens.

The odds of this happening to you are so minute as to be near zero.

If crime is low, the absence of reasons for crimes is psychologically very harmful to the victims.
Normally, such crimes with physical assault would be for robbing, or being on drugs or as social challenge, etc.
Here : not even a single reason so impossible to anticipate.
That is scary to me to need to check around you even if all boxes for safety are checked about your neighbour.

I applaud your optimism, yet I will be willing to bet that, first off, if he is tried as a minor, he will be out of state control in his early 20's, doomed to a pretty sullen life, UNLESS the social services here produce a miracle and somehow rehabilitate him.
If he is tried as an adult, odds are he will be out by the time he is in his mid-20's and once again, will be dependent upon social services here, as odds are he will never get married nor have children either.
He really needs help, but I am not the optimist as you are!

Seeing how he turned himself in, he must have felt not the way he thought he would after assaulting someone. After some time in a mental institution, provided he is cared for properly, this one youth might return back to the society. Now, what to do with numerous other youths going off the rollers each minute...
