Ibaraki Prefectural Police have arrested an 18-year-old girl on suspicion of abandoning the body of a newborn infant in the toilet at her home.
According to police, the girl, who is a high school student, gave birth in the toilet at her home on Aug 16, Sankei Shimbun reported. She then placed the newborn’s body in a plastic bag and left it tucked behind the toilet. On Aug 22, the girl’s father found the baby’s remains and contacted police.
Police said the father told them he was unaware that his daughter had been pregnant.
Police said an autopsy showed that the infant died of asphyxiation from pressure on the neck

How out of touch can one be, not knowing your daughter is pregnant. A teenagers newborn baby dies of unnatural causes, at least we don’t have to listen to the “maybe it was stillborn” rhetoric. Wanna bet she doesn’t do any time at all
sensei258
Strange that they don’t mention the girls mother at all. Maybe she was living alone with her father.

Typical Japanese maturity. 18 and still thinks hiding something behind the toilet makes the problem go away? 6 days it was there. 6 days to reflect and act.
Or 6 days to pout for Instagrams and visit Disneyland

Again! It's daily now.

So her father didn’t find it for six days. She must’ve stuck him behind the toilet tank, and he found it when it started smelling

rip to his angel gone too soon...how many murdered newborn each day? until authorities take real decisions to prevent that?

“Rest in Peace”. Another desperate, sad murder of a newborn infant:

Pressure on the neck could of come from the girl sitting on the toilet and trying to help with the birth by pulling on the head and neck to make the birth move along.

It's impossible for authorities (or anyone else) to preventing these things from happening. You could have great sex education and still have teen pregnancies. As for the crimes, as long as there are humans in the planet, events like this will happen.
You can't always put all the hate on authorities and government and expect them to solve everything for you. That's not their job. It's everyone's job. For example, one person that could have done a better job to prevent this something was the teen's father. For nine months he didn't know his daughter was pregnant? Really?

It's not a crime to be a clueless father. Maybe she was fat to begin with and he just didn't notice.

Here we go again. Another unwanted pregnancy that ended in tragedy because kids in Japan aren't being adequately educated on contraceptives and sexual health.
Also, how oblivious was the father that he didn't notice his kid grew a freakin' belly?!!

So before we go jumping to conclusions of murder, a lot of things can cause this during birth and can happen very naturally. Especially an unassisted home birth. Most commonly the cord can get wrapped around the neck. I am less inclined to believe that in a country with access to abortion somebody would go through a full pregnancy, with all the ravages it has on the body, just to give birth and then commit infanticide. The more likely scenario is something went wrong during the birth and she panicked.
Without further details, the only thing we can say she is guilty of is abandoning the body. Which is still a crime, but I see no reason to jump straight to murder. It's sad that, for whatever reason, she felt she couldn't get treatment or seek out hope earlier.

I thought abortion is legal in Japan. Why not just go to a clinic that does these things legally?
natsu823
Papa did not know because he don't see or talk his daughter 1x a week at most.
Some don't care about daughters no communication or she is scared of him.
Yohan
What about the mother?
Yohan
Good question, however it costs money.
I wonder who is the boyfriend who made her pregnant, is he still in contact with her? He is responsible too and should have also talked to her and offered to pay his part.
Manybells
What happened to the boy who got her pregnant or if didn’t use protection?

You tell me. Jaded means bored.

Medically speaking, some pregnancies are not eyecatching. And if under psychological duress and/or hiding willingly, one is not going to see a large tummy at all.
She may also have given birth to a living but premature baby.
Knowing how girls behave in Japan and how society judges early mothers, there is indeed a high chance that that girl did not see that life as something of importance and anyway that would cause prejudice to her to raise a baby at her age.
Hence the hiding under the rug, or in real behind the toilet water tank. Japanese intrinsic cultural habit of see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. (Three wise monkeys).
With no surprise, it will not lead to any much of consequence to anyone.
Johansawada
Well said Jonathan!
society as a whole needs to change (more accepting to single mothers) or else we will continue to see a mass number of these cases…

Yeah, she strangled it. Gruesome, but better than being cut up alive without anesthesia. What does the autopsy for late term abortion look like?
Yohan
You might say that about various other countries, however surely not about Japan.
No excuse for what she did. She is not a little helpless girl.
This woman is 18 y/o, for sure has internet access and her iPad with her all the time and can easily fnd any information about sex by herself and of course also plenty of information about her options, what to do if I am pregnant...
Yohan
I think, both choices are not the right way to go. There are other solutions available if a woman is pregnant and does not want to have children.

I dont know what is going through this girls mind right now, but it must be messed up, was the killing of the baby out of frustration, lack of help, knowledge of what to do? fear of what her farther would say or do? guilt or shame? this is sad reading this morning, very sad indeed.
Seesaw7
The trend these days is large flair clothings. No one would know she's pregnant. As for uniform the only way is to put on sweater to cover the bump. Still she must have had morning sickness, swollen legs. How could her family didn't notice all that,?
cleo
Not everyone experiences morning sickness or swollen legs. If the girl is on the chubby side, the bump might not be all that noticeable.
Yume
Family? Which family? Today family is an old-fashioned "institution". Forget it. We are all free to do what we like, be what we want, think what we like, no commitment, no obligation, just fun. Young people have time for sex but don't have time to ask for help and probably THERE IS NO ONE LISTENS TO THEM. We can blame the girl, the boy who just had fun, the father, the mother but this will not change the direction we are going.
Mark
A heartbreaking story, feel sorry for all involved .
kaimycahl
Police said the father told them he was unaware that his daughter had been pregnant. I guess the apple doesn't fall to far from the tree!! Check the father if he is that unaware!
RareReason
@Vreth
It most certainly does not. Look it up.
RareReason
Which is rather different from "cynical" in the context you attempted to use it and aligning perfectly with me.
Again, how many times must we read of young Japanese women behaving like this before we are made dull, apathetic, or cynical by experience or having or seeing too much of it?
You tell me.
RareReason
You may find one more similar quote about being immature and hiding dead babies out of sight... But that's it. An identical scorn of an identical crime.
