Police in Kita-Ibaraki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, have arrested an 18-year-old married couple on suspicion of abandoning a corpse after they buried their newborn baby in the garden of a home belonging to the man’s relatives.

Police said Thursday that the unemployed couple turned themselves in at a police station on Nov 21 and told them they had buried the infant a few days after it was born in early January this year, Kyodo News reported. They told police they were not married at the time.

Police found the remains the next day. The gender of the infant was undetermined.

Police said the couple told them the woman gave birth at their apartment and then they took it to the father's family’s home, where no one was living at the time, and buried the infant in the garden.

No information on how the baby died was released by police.

Unbelievable! What is going on in this world?

Disgusting. Why don't they let someone adopt the baby instead?

Sex is a crapshoot but you'd be better be ready if you roll a 2, 3 or 12.

There's just no excuse for this behavior, no matter what. Now there's a child who'll never fall in love, will never go to school, ...

I'm pretty sure that's not how things happened.

This is such a disturbing trend in Japan. Why is that so many people's go-to solution instead of heading to the hospital? Matter of fact, why aren't they calling an ambulance the second the woman goes into labour? Is it really that easy to hide a pregnancy in Japan? The whole thing is so confounding.

Worst part is that they won't be charged because they are technically children in the eyes of the law.

What is the actual cost of dealing with the dead in Japan ? And if you have no income, do you have any assistance ?

Interesting question, however maybe not relevant in this case. There is no indication that this was a stillbirth and the couple had no alternatives to dispose of the remains. It may be that the baby was buried alive.
