18-year-old woman arrested over death of 9-month-old son

Police in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, have arrested an 18-year-old unemployed woman on suspicion of killing her nine-month-old son at her home.

According to police, the mother — who cannot be named because she is a minor — suffocated her son early Friday morning, Sankei Shimbun reported. She called 119 at around 2:40 a.m. and said her son was not breathing. The baby was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The hospital contacted police who detained the mother for voluntary questioning. Police said she admitted to killing her baby and she was charged with murder on Saturday.

Police quoted the woman as saying she was stressed out from child-rearing. She lived in the house with other members of her family. There was no information on who the baby’s father was.

Sad all around, more health services need to be available.

She is 18 years old and has 9 months baby. Must have been pregnant in 16. Unknown father. That itself is a tragedy! I wish that happens to no one.

I've posted it many times, no sense in committing murder when there are so many couples out there more than willing to take the child legally or illegally.

That poor woman -- I hope she gets the help she needs. I have been in her place.

Wait, are you saying that you murdered your own child??

Every life is precious, no matter the stage of life its in.

Sorry, where was it even remotely implied in this article or any of the comments that the life of a 9 month old kid is not precious?

As hard to believe as it may be but there is a large segment of radical feminists who do not particularly oppose the post birth abortion of children.

You are using a lot of the hedging/qualified language there that one uses to create a straw man argument. I have never heard of anybody, feminist or not, seriously saying they support anything called "post birth abortion".

"Burning Bush

"Every life is precious, no matter the stage of life its in."

Doesn't make any sense. Call her a "girl".

Sad to hear this unfortunate news. 18 years old and left to raise a baby alone.

Rest in Peace to the poor baby. A long life of endless possibilities cruelly taken away.

May justice come down hard on this child killer. Absolutely EVERYONE in history goes through stress when raising babies, it is NEVER an excuse to kill them.

This kind of news are becoming the new normal. Well better get used to it.

This is a country of 120 million. Among such a large population group, alas it is "normal" that occasionally something like this happens. Get perspective.

Though this is a tragic story, I feel like the Japanese health care professionals/hospitals need to step up their services to help and educate new and young mothers the role of a new mother and what to expect at what ages to prevent cases like these with weekly/monthly home counseling, accessible advice and a community of new mothers to talk, guide and help other mothers going through the same stages of motherhood. This would greatly help the mothers, thus give the newborns a better chance of life.

As hard to believe as it may be but there is a large segment of radical feminists who do not particularly oppose the post birth abortion of children. They see it as a women’s rights issue and a child as a potential barrier to a woman’s ability to be an equal member of society. Somehow they seem to overlook the fact that about half of these children are female.

lock her up for a few decades at the least

It costs taxpayers 10 million a year to keep one person in jail...

I don't understand how some women think. Can't you just put the baby in it's cot and go outside and scream. Why can't they take a step back? You don't need to kill the child just because it's difficult. It's not going to die of you left it to cry.

@oldman

It's a sad story, for sure. I wonder what prison will accomplish in this case though.

Also, what do you mean by people commenting to spite you?

What a sorry excuse, lock her up for a few decades at the least. It is no coincidence these kinds of things are happening with alarming frequency these days. No doubt there will be some that will excuse this sort of monstrous behavior, just to spite me.
