Police in Kashihara, Nara Prefecture, have arrested an 18-year-old youth on suspicion of shoplifting comic books and figurines from a second-hand shop to get money to pay for bowling.

According to police, the suspect, who cannot be named because he is a minor, works as a plumber, Sankei Shimbun reported. He is accused of stealing two action figures and 10 comic books in the popular animated series “One Piece” (worth about 18,760 yen) at around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday from a second-hand shop in Kashihara.

Police said a security alarm went off in the store when the suspect attempted to exit the premises. When a male employee approached him, he fled with a bag containing the stolen items.

Police later found the suspect at a nearby amusement facility. He was identified from store surveillance camera footage.

Police said the youth told them he and a friend were bowling on Tuesday afternoon when they ran out of money. He was quoted as saying “I wanted to exchange the shoplifted items for money to pay for the bowling.”

Exactly how much did he think he'd get if he resold those comic books to a store? I'll tell you, not enough to finance his "bowling" expeditions. He'd be lucky if he gets ¥500 because they buy them back at ¥0.10~ per manga.

They may have "retailed" for that much, but I guarantee they won't resell for that much. And what a choice, One Piece? Lol, who still buys that stuff?

Soo.......did he get the round of bowling? Don't leave us in suspense. We demand to know if the hard work paid off.

I guess it was kinda cute that he wanted to take his boyfriend on a bowling date and all. Maybe that impressed him? We need more details here, bottom line.

Japan headline news: 18-year-old youth arrested for shoplifting

Most other countries headline news: Murder, violence, riots, civil unrest, etc.

There are problems here but I'm glad to call Japan home.

I can kind of understand because I like bowling. What an incredibly safe country where shoplifting is national news.

That's Japan though. It's either an incredibly minor offence, or "Woman commits suicide and murders her entire family with her."

Little in between.
