The Sendai District Public Prosecutors' Office has sent a 19-year-old man who was arrested last month for attempting to kill his mother, to a family court.
The incident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. on Sept 17, NTV reported. The victim, who is in her 40s, called 110 and said she had been stabbed. Police said the woman was stabbed in the abdomen. She was taken to hospital, conscious but unable to speak. A blood-stained knife was found in the apartment.
Police found the woman’s son at around 7 p.m. the next day at a shopping center in Tokyo after tracking his mobile phone signals and he was arrested.
Police said he has admitted to the allegation but has so far given no motive.
Prosecutors said the suspect’s living conditions will be investigated before the family court makes a ruling.

Am I the only one noticing that while domestic violence is generally the male partner offending against the female partner, in Japan there seems to be more violence between parents and their children?
Comparatively speaking, I've always felt that families in Japan don’t seem to get along very well. Many Japanese people I’ve met have little to no relationship with their parents and siblings, which I haven’t noticed to such a degree anywhere else.
Any theories on what might cause this?
Is it related to the high mental health, high suicide, and low happiness levels in Japan?

It's only anecdotal but I've seen that, too -- people not on speaking terms, or alienated parents. A tiny part is tanshin funin, which can challenge relationships.

"19-year-old ... sent to family court"
Shouldn't he be tried in criminal court, as an adult?
