19-year-old girl arrested for abandoning aborted fetus in restaurant fridge

Police in Miyazaki City said Monday they have arrested an unemployed 19-year-old girl on suspicion of abandoning her aborted fetus in a restaurant refrigerator.

The young woman, whose residence is unknown, underwent an abortion on Dec 20 when she was four months pregnant at a hospital in Miyazaki City, Fuji TV reported.

Following the procedure, the hospital gave her the fetus and she took it to a restaurant, where one of her relatives is employed, and left it in a cooler bag in a refrigerator. The bag and its contents were found on Jan 25.

Police said the suspect, who came in for voluntary questioning on Jan 28, has been charged with abandoning a corpse.

"You've just undergone a traumatic and stressful event in your life, here is your aborted fetus as a memento."

What? The hospital gave it to her? Was that so that she have a cremation? Aren't bodies usually released to funeral services rather than family members by law?

This makes no sense whatsoever! If you have a limb amputated they incinerate it or use it for science, But to give an aborted fetus to a woman ...

This sounds so wrong in every way. A 19 year old girl given her aborted featus after the op. Never heard of such a thing, sounds totaly insensative.. Poor girl must be mortified. Surely if this was a regular hospital there should be some other procedure in place to deal with the featus. With regards putting it in the fridge, Im pretty sure she had no idea what she should do with it...no counseling...no advice. What sort of hospital did she visit?

Following the procedure, the hospital gave her the fetus

But did not tell the poor girl what she should do with it. Very cold.

This has got to be the most bizarre piece of news I have read so far this year.

Firstly sometimes Japan is ridiculously insensitive to some things about abortions. Nurses and doctors giving their personal opinions, and asking you if you would reconsider. I found their behavior to be a bit intrusive, but then again so are a lot of medical things herr. These people should be called in for questioning as to why they would give a teenager the fetus. Secondly she did not abandon a corpse. How ridiculous is that???

According to the link below, "...an abortion taking place during the second trimester (12 weeks to 21 weeks & 6 days), however, will require hospital admission for a few days... For a second trimester abortion in Japan, the hospital is required to provide a death certificate to the ward hall (classified as stillbirth) and go through the process of retrieving burial approval, cremation, and optional placement at a cemetery...." [as of 2015]

I wonder why they gave her the fetus? Is it usual practice for them to do that when the woman lacks finances for burial?

They must have been trying to make the girl loose her mind. I would have lost mine if this happened to me.

Poor young girl. How one can work in an abortion clinic and lack so much sensitivity/judgement is beyond me. Instead of questioning their 'suspect' (!!!) the cops should talk to social/health services and contact this clinic asap!

What were they thinking?! I can hardly believe what I have just read.

This is so sad in so many ways. The main question in my mind is why would the hospital give her the fetus? That is just crazy to me. What was she supposed to do with the innocent child that was not allowed to live. There are plenty of families wanting/willing to adopt an infant. Sensei has the biggest heart I have seen on these boards when coming to children. I am sure there are plenty of people like him in Japan.

Anyway, this seems torturous to the mother and inhumane to the fetus. Shame on the hospital!

I'm suprised no ones calling out the backwardness of this entire episode. First world country? Really?

@bredmmond:

surely she should be charged with causing the death of that body.

No she should not. Abortion is legal up to twenty one weeks.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

There's no crime. It's just a clump of cells, like a tapeworm, according to certain feminists.

Maybe she was in emotional shock. The most common type of abortion for second trimester is a D and C or D and E. So that wasn't a cute little doll curled up in a ball, it was shredded into pieces before being vacuumed out. Maybe she saw that and freaked out.

The great majority of abortions are done because the child would be an inconvenience. Sad, that the would-be parents didn't practice their birth control before conception

Not here to argue the rights of getting an abortion, but if the aborted fetus is considered a corpse and she is getting charged with abandoning a corpse, shouldn't someone be charged with the murder.....

Girls.. if your bf says he he doesn't like condoms.. tell him you don't like the feel of unprotected sex, nor the feeling of an abortion..****

Too many questions about this. Four months is a pretty late term abortion. I guess it's possible she didn't realize she was pregnant. I can't understand why the hospital gave her the fetus. Is that usual practice? Why was the fetus put in the restaurant fridge? Was she trying to hide it from her parents? Was she planning a service for the baby? The more I think about it, the more questions I have. This is just bizarre!

Is there that much left of a four-month fetus after an abortion?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Haven't the J keystones anything better to do? What a waste of time .....and money!

I sometimes feel like most of these stories are fabricated. because they have no solidity to it. No names (of course because she is 19)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well I am glad they did not serve it. Gross. What a pathetic hospital.

The fetus at 4 months is about 11cm long. It cannot survive on its own nor in an incubator.

The hospital staff should be reprimanded.

So many logical inconsistencies. If it's a human being who needs a death certificate and can result in the mother being charged with abandoning a corpse, why is it even legal to kill it in the first place? If it is not a human being, why are are these things like death certificates and criminal charges going on? How do people who go through late-term abortions in Japan resolve these inconsistencies, I wonder...

Fouxdeta. That was my point.

The great majority of abortions are done because the child would be an inconvenience.

And this is based on what source of accurate information?

The only birth control which is 100% effective, is abstinence. And we know how effective that is as a main form of birth control.

Why she had an abortion is nobody's business, and your speculation is a nonsense for that reason. There are many reasons why a woman decides not to be pregnant, and unless she is the man's long-term partner, he has no say in the matter. Especially if he can't be bothered to make sure the birth control is in place.

Why did the hospital allow this young woman to take the remains away, is the question? Has that become commonplace? If not, then they are at fault.

This is the most bizarre story ever. Firstly, why did the hospital give this woman the aborted fetus? Is this standard procedure?? What was she suppose to do with it?

Secondly why did she/ her family freeze it? AND in a restaurant freezer? What were they going to do with it? Feed it to customers? Absolutely crazy!!! At least take it to a crematory and have a proper cremation for the baby! Ugh!

It sounds to me as though the poor girl needs help, not a criminal record.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

But did not tell the poor girl what she should do with it. Very cold.

Quite possibly but we don't know that for certain, lots of stories here are missing full details. Maybe the girl is none too bright or, more likely, was grief-stricken at the time.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

If she's being charged with abandoning a body, surely she should be charged with causing the death of that body. A body means a once living human. That's why they also require a death certificate.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Surely it's illegal to refer to it as a corpse. It's a clump of cells until it's fully exited the birth canal. Nancy Pelosi's going to be very mad at somebody!
