19-year-old girl killed in failed murder-suicide bid

Police said Saturday they have arrested a 19-year-old youth for allegedly killing his girlfriend, 19, at an apartment in Yokohama.

Police say the suspect, a university freshman, stabbed his girlfriend, Shiori Shiraki, to death on Thursday night before attempting to kill himself, TV Asahi reported. He cannot be named because he is a minor.

According to police, the suspect was taken to hospital having sustained self-inflicted knife wounds to his abdomen and chest. His wounds are not life-threatening, police said.

During questioning, the man was quoted as saying that he killed his girlfriend because she wanted to break up with him and that he tried to kill himself, too. Police said they will question him further after he recovers.

Wow...just wow. This man deserves to be "LIFE SENTENCED" due his idiotic move. Just because she wanted to break up with you does not give you the right to kill her.....

It's called "MOVING ON" you moron -_-.....

But he's a minor, he'll probably be released soon and his record sealed, after giving a sincere apology to her family that is.

he killed his girlfriend because she wanted to break up with him

Is it any wonder there are so many single women in Japan? How many times a month do read articles like this and stalking ex-girlfriends? Keep it up Japanese men! You are keeping the single foreigners very busy! I do not know any Japanese girl that doesn't have a stalking story or been the victim of some sort of violence from an ex-boyfriend and, I know a lot of Japanese women. ;D

and you tax payers will have to pay for this guys room and board for the rest of his life? How is it that a woman's life and also a man's life are so meaningless ... life seems to mean so little in Asia. Like ants on the road as long as you dont get stepped on you just keep moving ahead and be happy it is not you. That is no way to live. Not that this is anything new.. not that America is any better ...murder and death in movies, TV shows and violent videogames are making life surreal, meaningless and suicide acceptable.

Don't name the victim, name the killer!

ONLY IN THE MOST STUPID AND IMMATURE LAW SYSTEM could 19 years of age STILL be considered a minor. Come on Japan get with the rest of the world on the age of being an adult. Yes, I know some parts of the US have a 21 year old drinking age but you are an adult in the eyes of the court system at either 18 or 19.

And yet the crime is incredibly immature. Can't have what he wants so has a tantrum. Him being tried as a minor won't result in him being released. Just can't be named. Not sure what the relevance of comparing to the US is, and IMHO the only people who think that 18 or 19 is mature enough to be "responsible" is an 18/19 year old themselves (or younger). Most reasonable people know it is still too young.

A 19 y/o university student still considered a "minor". What a crock. They really do need to lower the age to 18 or lower.

I have had and still have discussions with my son about this sort of thing. I told him that rejection and breaking up are part of lifes journey and you must respect the wishes of someone who no longer wants to be a part of your life. Keep your head up, your dignity in tact and move on. Such a terrible thing to happen to this young lady.

Too obsessed. And ego-centric. Oh well is all there is to say, there are too many like him in the world for me or anyone else to stem the tide.

Don't know what everyone is whining about his age for. A difference of one or two years for things like this is just an arbitrary clerical decision. To me there is no material difference between 17 and 18 nor between 18 and 19. But you have to draw a line somewhere. So it gets drawn where it gets drawn.

He tried to kill himself? Jeez, give him another chance.

To be fair, the young man is 19. Having been that age once, I can recall that the end of a relationship was just as soul-crushing as it can be now, though the difference being that at 19, it really seems like the end of the world. This is not to try to polish up what is a gruesome and horrible tragedy.

My heart goes out to the family of the young woman. It is too terrible to imagine her suffering.
