Police said the victim was waiting for the traffic light to turn green at the intersection near Kawachi-Kosaka Station on the Kintetsu Railway’s Nara Line, when the man suddenly hit her with a hammer. She was taken to hospital but her injuries are not life-threatening.

The assailant was subdued by pedestrians and later arrested on a charge of attempted murder. Police said the man has been rambling incoherently since his arrest. He was quoted as admitting that he hit the woman but added he doesn't know why he did it.

Well, that's new ! Mental illness or drugs maybe ?

Good on the people who helped too.

"I was drunk and don't remember a thing"

"I did it because I was under a lot of stress"

"I wasn't trying to hurt her I just wanted her to listen to me"

"I just wanted to see what giving someone a concussion was like"

"I wanted to hit someone with a hammer, anyone would do"

Again? A hammer is about the deadliest blunt-force weapon you can get. Extremely easy to kill someone!

@ Michael Jackson- you forgot one “excuse” in that sad litany of them:

”I was being bullied at work, and wanted to let off some steam.”

We have read them all before so many times. The scum sure seem to have a liking for picking out defenceless girls and women, too.

I hope the poor girl recovers, it would have been a terrifying experience for her.

" the man suddenly hit her with a hammer"

You can see such obvious loose cannons even walk by the fuzz-shacks , and they dont get checked.

Wasn’t there a story just a week or two ago about another guy who followed a young women into a bathroom and beat her over the head with a hammer?

Wolfpack, that is correct.

If crazies in japan carrying hammers and randomly hitting young women on the head is becoming a trend it is extremely worrying.

Good on the bystanders subduing that guy. I wonder why this trend still continues? Too much RPG or edgy anime and manga perhaps?

Really need more mental health in most countries. Japan not excepted.

Some Americans have the same excuses to carry concealed weapons in public. They're just moronic arrogant bullies, making excuses for murder and then they play the victim-blaming game. Japan needs to do something about these crazees too before it gets like America.

Will the lady be OK? I do hope she is quick out of the hospital. How is an obviously mentally damaged person dealt with by the courts in Japan? Is there any help for these people to learn how to deal with their out-of-control mental torment? No one behaves like this who's in their right mind. The desperation caused by constant stabs of emotional pain drives most acts of violence. The woman he attacked is best served by sincere apology where she can feel in her person he is no longer a threat. He needs help to get to that point. I hope she does not respond to this event by living in fear. She needs to go to the place she was attacked and have a coffee, maybe watch a few funny videos on her cell. She needs to change the emotion around the attack. The only way we really know how to do that is to, quote; "get back on the horse". To face it and see it for what it was. A random event unlikely to be repeated. To turn your head in fear is always a mistake... we all know that. I wish the lady a peaceful, untroubled sleep and a content, quiet mind. Soon.
