No no no , not for giving exotic Animals to Friends , In Japan exotic animals and dogs are sold at 200,000 kittens to pups , parrots St 500,000 ! These animals are than to be produce and sold at 500% Profit !

It seems like they have no malevolent intention but undeniably they were idiot if they really believed they could get thru the security..

There should be a place where you could out pet shops that are doing illegal things...

Exactly how one gets all these animals in suitcases amazes me. And surely lots of these would die in the freezing luggae hold at 30,000 + feet?

How could these fools possibly think that they would be able to get away with having that many animals in their suitcases? I'd assume that smuggling 1 capybara would be easily caught on an x-ray, let alone 4.

Apart from the illegality of it all, how is this even possible? 4 capybaras and 21 snakes? Come again?

I'd like to know if they have gotten away with this type of thing in the past. Seems like an awful lot of animals to sneak out of one country and through to another country.

It's happened a few times here in Australia with some Japanese caught trying to smuggle wildlife out. I'm hoping the Thais will send the rught message to stop any future attempts.

I love it when these guys get caught smuggling overseas and face very serious, very real punishments instead of getting away with it or facing a relatively light fine/punishment and not getting the message here. They should face whatever local law dictates, no exception, and that should serve as a message to those morons who think they are above the law and so casually go elsewhere to smuggle animals or drugs or what have you -- regardless of where they are from or where they are committing the crime.

And as others have said, the pet industry needs to be revamped here so that this kind of act is discouraged. It's akin to still being able to buy ivory or blood diamonds.

They are going to know how the animals felt very very soon!!! Enjoy the "Bangkok Hilton"

Sadly the exotic pet trade is very lucrative in Japan, lots of people try to smuggle critters back to Japan, some can sell fro Y100's of thousands of yen. I remember one shop I walked into near Higashi Nakano about 15yrs ago that had a huge sloth hanging from branches in the corner & down on the floor in an aquarium I kid you not was a ^%&^^(ing BEAVER~!!~~

Some critters that are captive bred & relatively small if properly taken care of I have no issue with but CLEARLY a TON of endangered species are smuggled into Japan & once past Customs no one gives a rats(sorry rats!). And some of the large animals being sold & being kept to live like a Japanese bachelor in Tokyo, ie in a tiny rabbit hutch...............needs to be stopped & people jailed.

Needs to be a whole lotta changes in the entire pet industry in Japan but don't expect much to change sadly!

The Post quoted the suspects as saying they had bought the animals at a market for the purpose of raising exotic animals in Japan and giving some to their friends.

They must have a lot of friends.

I say, after a long spell in jail and a big fine, send them back inside suitcases.

If you have ever ventured into an exotic pet shop in Japan you would know there is a huge market for exotic animals. There are all kinds of protected and endangered species for sale. I was surprised by how many Australian animals were for sale, which are all protected. Possums, kangaroos, lizards, snakes and many parrot species were all openly displayed for sale. I even saw a bilby in one pet shop that is highly endangered and extinct in many parts of Australai. It is 'supposed to be' illegal in Japan, but it is not regulated and once the exotic animals make it into the country they are free to be sold. It's just disgusting!

Agree with a jail term for them. Hopefully it will all end well for those poor animals.

So glad they were caught. They need to be made and example of - put them in jail for a very long time.
