Why Japanese would intend to go on a "crime spree" in a third world nation? They could go on a crime spree in Japan and make 100 times more money!

Maybe they thought that they'd be more likely to get away with it in Cambodia than in Japan.

Maybe they thought the police wouldn't be as adept in finding them.

Maybe they thought there wouldn't be as many security cameras around, or as many people with smartphones who could catch video.

Really bizarre on all levels, why?

Living in Phnom Phnom Penh, I once witnessed an irate mob chase down and beat the living tar out of a man for stealing a motorbike. Street justice. All I can say is that the two were lucky the police aprehended them before the locals were able to get their hands on them. Then again, a Cambodian prison is probably the last place you'd want to be. 30 years may as well be a death sentence. Apparently they did it because they "needed the money". A bizarre story. And while I would never condone such a despicaple act, if they are guilty, one has to wonder what really happened. Cambodia is known for its rampant corruption of government officials and law enforcement. If guilty then they deserve what they get. Karma

It is strange..they go to a foreign country with such an intention to become criminals..especially for a Japanese it is incredible.

They probably thought, for whatever reasons, that they would more likely get away with the crime in a place like Cambodia, than in Japan.

People from other countries -- the U.S., Australia, the U.K., Germany, wherever -- commit crimes while abroad sometimes. There's no reason why Japanese people would be immune from it.

Probably some real stupid flunky bosozoku / Yakuza wannabees that were just too wild and brain dead to make the cut. I'll bet the people that know these two were probably worried they'd do something stupid.

Nowhere in the article does it say they are intelligent.

I’m not sure why it’s “fishy” that a Japanese killed someone just because it took place in a third world country as if they are above that.

I saw this on the news this morning. The victim was more like an Uber driver instead of a taxi driver because the vehicle was a regular car. And I couldn't get over the fact that these two guys murdered someone but on Japanese news they had to black out their handcuffs in every picture. Why?

I agree. 15-30 years in a Cambodian prison, especially considering they are Japanese and the crime they committed, will be a fate potentially equal to the death penalty.

Terrible crime. The driver was working to try to support his family and is viciously murdered. Really sad.

I definitely wonder why these two would do this. They obviously weren’t broke.

The driver has 4 kids. The criminals should be made to do hard labor long term, something that would yield money to support the kids.

There is no death penalty in Cambodia (how civilised). 30 years in one of their prisons should be punishment enough.

I would not like to be in there shoes, a foreigner killing an national, wow! 1: either they were desperate for some reason to steal the car, 2: dumb or totally stupid, we all know that these sort of countries dont have a nice prison cell to your self, its 30-40 in a compound and its every man or woman for them selfs, I would not like to be in shoes inside one of Cambodias prisons. as for the children that have been deprived of there farther, they should pay some sort of money to the family as compensation, that's if they live very long in the prison.

It’s done whenever someone is arrested regardless of nationality or location of arrest. It’s a defensive measure that news broadcasters take to avoid defamation lawsuits in case the suspect is found innocent. A couple decades ago, a lawyer (if my memory is correct) was arrested for fraud but found innocent. He later sued the TV stations and newspapers for circulating photos of him in handcuffs and tarnishing his reputation.

Pnom Penh has some genuinely nice people, but at the end of the day it attracts a lot of weirdos that turn it into a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

The article you linked to didn't say anything about them not intending to kill the guy, nor that things got out of hand.

To be fair, Cambodia is a pretty corrupt place. We're reading news that has made it to Japan about something that happened in rural Cambodia. There's a good chance the telephone game has happened, and what we are reading is quite different from what actually happened.

Something doesn't add up here. Why would these 2 punks go all the way to a 3rd world country to jack a car in the middle of nowhere, while planning heist. More likely a yakuza inside job, or maybe a drug deal gone wrong. The journos need to dig a bit deeper here as something is clearly amiss.
