I think it’s a matter of degree. Two right wing headbangers shooting at a building makes headline news here.
In some places, that’s just part of a night out.
wtfjapan
In Texas, the same would be buried on page six. wouldnt be reported at all , its just target practice in Texas.
Toasted Heretic
Terrorists trying to stir things up, as if needed be.
Try practising a bit of harmonious living, lads. Rise above the stupidity and pettiness.
Disillusioned
Wow! A drive-by shooting in Japan? I’m glad to say that is very rare.
Alistair Carnell
Of course their motives are known, they’re right wing nationalistic cretins. Don’t credit them with any intelligence for a grand scheme or master plan. They just want to stir trouble.
Jimizo
Complete knobs. Feed them on kim chee in the nick.
PTownsend
And we are right to constantly say that. How many people were shot in Texas today?
I'm glad I long ago got away from gun-related violence. You own it, pardner. Go back to roping your goats.
Toasted Heretic
Come on over to Japan and find out.
It's not that complicated - gun crime is very rare - the Japanese don't see guns as a necessity. Occasionally, you'll get eejits like these two but it really is the exception to the rule.

Right wing cretins trying to stir the pot.

How is this possible? just as its possible as there have been almost no gun massacres in Japan the last 30yrs,
gun free doesn't mean no guns, just very few compared to a per ca pita basis. fewer guns= less gun violence, doesn't take a simpleton to understand, America has 10.5 gun deaths per 100,000, Japan 0.06, meaning Americans are 175times more likely to die by gunshot than Japanese.
Laguna
Tex, a couple of gates dented by bullets fired by a few yahoos here is frontpage news. In Texas, the same would be buried on page six.
nandakandamanda
This is newsworthy in Japan because guns are so hard to come by, their very rarity, and the act of going against the harsh laws against gun ownership and use makes people sit up and take notice. These guys feel so strongly about something that they are willing to go to jail just for firing a gun even with no intent to wound or kill.
A hand grenade thrown at the US embassy in Montenegro was reported, not widely though.

As a person who despises leftist ideology, it's always embarrassing when someone like the above turns up and lives up to the worst stereotypes leftists have of conservatives.
bruinfan
Send them to North Korea ! Trade them for some of the kidnapped Japanese.
Aly Rustom
They should investigate what association these two muppets belong to and put it on the terrorist watch list, same as Aleph (formerly Aum Shinrikyo).
BurakuminDes
How do you know they had "no intent to wound or kill"? Uyoku dantai groups and members (if indeed this is who these individuals are) have a long history of using violence, intimidation and threats - even against children. Truly horrible individuals. Firing a gun in a public area, into an area where there could be any number of people, takes their threat to another level - and warrants many, many years in prison.
OssanAmerica
These two are idiot right wing activists, maybe terrorist-wannabes. But they don't qualify as right wing terrorists. What real terrorists target a building at 3:50 am when the odds of people being there are zero and make no effort to infiltrate it, instead firing and hitting a gate? Thrown them in jail, they're too stupid to be allowed out in public.
Toasted Heretic
Acts of terror are carried out to cause disruption, panic and fear.
These two clowns succeeded in doing so.
They are terrorists.
Alfie Noakes
Harry Kane's mum? What's it to her?
It's amusing to see many who criticize American gun violence scrambling to downplay a couple of uyoku/yakuza scum firing guns on the streets of Tokyo.
nandakandamanda
By that definition, I agree with you TH.
It is a typical method of intimidation here to send a razor blade or a live bullet through the post to someone, or to fire a gun in the direction of the headquarters of another yakuza gang. Usually the police come and find a broken window or a chipped stone or brick. Someone gets a message.
M3M3M3
Probably best not to jump to conclusions about the motive yet. My understanding is that the North Koreans are involved in all sorts of shady business dealings to secure hard currency for NK. This may have been a message from someone who wasn't pleased about a business deal gone bad. The two guys could just be lackeys. Who knows.
oldman_13
Despicable and cowardly attack.
But it still amazes me how these pro North Korean groups, schools, and organizations are openly allowed to thrive in Japan. Organizations that worship the Kim leaders and toe the NK party line (which includes hatred for all things Japan).
toshiko
@econ: In Japan owning a gun is crime unless you are a registered hunter in a certain prefecture.
Takeshi Hasegawa
The police protects not the guys but the public security, of course. In fact police behaves in the very same way when lefties do protest campaigns.
Luddite
You are contradicting yourself. The whole point of terrorism is to instill fear, which they have accomplished.
They are terrorists, crappy ones, but terrorists.
Luddite
Moronic, racist, Poundland terrorists.
Where did they get the guns?
smithinjapan
Texas A&: "But, but, but.... Foreign leftists visiting this site say Japan is a gun-free zone. They constantly say they live there to get away from gun-related violence in the countries they ran away from."
The difference is here this is major news, as guns are extremely rare, gun-related events even rarer, and deaths by gun almost none existent. In Texas driving around and shooting up fences is a Facebook status update, with of course the pictures of the white trash drinking and driving, sporting mullets, etc.
Takeshi Hasegawa: "The police protects not the guys but the public security, of course. In fact police behaves in the very same way when lefties do protest campaigns."
Wrong. When "lefties" protest they tell them to stop because the right wing might give them trouble -- they don't prevent the right wing from doing it. I've seen it firsts hand on a number of occasions, and even once told I should not visit a certain area at that time of day because there were right wingers screaming at people from black trucks (they seemed to have forgotten Japan's laws on decibel level noise all of a sudden).
And what's with the "lefties" comment? You a wannabe American right winger or something? You maybe respect these guys and believe in what they did?
Strangerland
A lot of the gun lovers seem to be under this weird idea that if there is any gun shooting in another country, it means that trying to get rid of guns is a futile effort, and therefore justifies the US stance of doing nothing to control guns.
It's a fairly ridiculous concept though - that if you cannot 100% get rid of something undesireable, then you shouldn't bother getting rid of 90% of it. There's no logic behind it.
Carlito
Instead of talking about Guns alone, how about those lingering and growing fascist, and xenophobic movements in countries that have had a recent history of major global conflict.
Japan, Germany, Italy, Spain
gokai_wo_maneku
Yes, where did they get the gun? Usually, only yakuza have guns, and they know better than to use them on civilians. But usually even they only shoot windows of rival gangs. Are these guys yakuza?
Cosmos1
Did you know ? as Michele Kane used to say " anything that floats between Niigata & Vladivostok
kitzrow
Oops! I just Emailed friends saying that I have not read about a shooting in Japan for a long, long time. That record is broken. Time to start a new one!
BeerDeliveryGuy
The old intimidation-by-sending-bullets only works when your victim is unarmed.
Chongryun has known links to (presumably) armed NK sleeper agents and spies. Gonna have to fire a few shots over the bow to rattle them.
Nan Ferra
This is a bit like a Crocodile Dundee moment....."you call that a knife??This is a knife!". The NKers will have add their anti-aircraft guns trained on these low end chimpira with their undersized hand cannons!
smithinjapan
And yet, these clowns, often protected by police, would say they are doing it because NK are terrorists. Guess we know who the real terrorists are on this.
gokai_wo_maneku
Hmm, a gun shooting in Japan and this story didn't make the NHK news tonight. Way too much Olympics.
Ganbare Japan!
People saying this is a "terrorist incident" are wrong. They only meant to scare the people in so-called fake "embassy". No harm was intended, but the incident is regrettable becuase owning a gun in Japan is illegal, except for hunters. My guess is they were so sick and fed up with Chongryon and Special Permanent residents (特別永住者) being anti-Japan and fully supporting the evil North Korea government. Their frustration took over in a moment of silliness.
@ OssanAmerica
I agree. Foolish act, but no terrorism.
juminRhee
Don't arrest them. Give them sanctions like they do for when north Korea lobs missiles over Japan. Sanctions seems to work for North Korea...;)
Heckleberry
Bullets fired at a foreign embassy wouldn't even be reported? Do you want to re-think that post? Go on..
oldman_13
Agree. I don't condone the shootings but what can you expect when an organization that supports a North Korean regime that preaches hatred of all things Japanese is allowed to openly exist.
Do we fault South Koreans when they torch or try to destroy Japanese embassies?
I'm sure the world media will run away with this news as another 'example' of Japanese xenophobia and racism, but of course taken out of context as these two targeted a North Korean embassy and not South Korea's.
CaptDingleheimer
If this happened in Texas, they wouldn't have missed.
Just sayin'
socrateos
They meant no killing. Just a little scare to show what can happen to them. Mission accomplished for them.
Texas A&M Aggie
But, but, but.... Foreign leftists visiting this site say Japan is a gun-free zone. They constantly say they live there to get away from gun-related violence in the countries they ran away from.
