2 men arrested over man’s murder last November

Police in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, said Tuesday they have arrested two men on suspicion of killing and robbing a 49-year-old man at his apartment last autumn.

The body of Kaoru Kawahara was found covered with a futon on the living room floor at around 10:20 a.m. on Nov 20 by his mother, Fuji TV reported. She told police she had gone to his apartment because she was concerned after not having heard from her son since Oct 31. The apartment was locked but she had a key.

There were several stab wounds on Kawahara’s body and an autopsy showed he had been dead for about three days. A balcony window of the third-floor apartment was broken and police believe the killers got into the apartment that way.

Kawahara’s car was stolen and left abandoned at a park six kilometers away. The killers had also taken his cell phone and wallet.

Police said the two suspects — Junichi Hayashi, 40, and Yuta Suzuki, 37 — work at the same company. They said Suzuki has admitted tot he crime, but Hayashi has only said “I don’t know,” when questioned about his involvement.

The two suspects were identified from street surveillance camera footage in the vicinity of Kawahara's home.

Police said no motive has been determined for the murder yet but local media quoted an acquaintance of Kawahara as saying that he was in debt.
