2 men break into temple, assault elderly man and steal ¥50,000

Two men broke into a temple in Akiruno, Tokyo, on Monday morning, assaulted an elderly man who lives there and stole 50,000 yen.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 5 a.m. at Kotokuji Temple, broadcaster TBS reported. Police said they received a call from a man saying two men had broken into the temple residence and beaten up his father.

Police said the victim, a man in his 80s, was hit on the head with a crowbar. He was taken to hospital. Police said his injuries were not life-threatening. The man’s wife, who is in her 70s, suffered minor injuries.

Police said they are examining nearby surveillance camera footage to try and identify the two men.
