Two men were killed in separate hit-and-run incidents in Saitama and Kanagawa prefectures early Saturday, police said.
In the first incident, in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, police received a call from a witness just after midnight, in which the caller said that a man on a bicycle had been struck by a truck which kept going, Fuji TV reported. The victim, identified as Masayuki Nagai, 52, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In the second incident, Hideo Kudo, a 69-year-old newspaper deliveryman, was found on a road in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, at around 5 a.m. after his minibike was hit by a station wagon, according to a witness. Kudo was pronounced dead at hospital.

I don't ride after dark anymore after I got cut off and almost killed last year. I had lights and the guy had to have seen me as he passed me, but the bicycle helmet saved my life. When I came to he was gone but he did call the police for insurance purposes as there was a me sized dent on his van. RIP

I wonder if the drivers were drunk or tired or speeding or using their smartphones.
Again - it is really amazing how cyclist deaths like these are, for the most part, ignored, while the, far less frequent, minor accident caused by a cyclist is treated as a huge outrage.

Not really blaming the victim, merely pointing out facts. I regularly see cyclists and pedestrians on unlit / poorly lit roads near my house, of course they are rarely if ever found to be at fault. Just this week while stopped at lights at night, a motorbike came around a corner with no lights on at all. Whose fault would it be if a car hit him?
Whatever the case, sad and avoidable.

Basically, if you run down someone and keep on driving, regardless of who had lights on, it's your fault.

We all know that the motor vehicle is always at fault here even if the bicycle ran head on on the wrong side of the road with no light and the rider was crocked to the gills. Yet there seems to be no penalty for bicycle riders who care less about their safety. Hope they catch the hit and run driver.

Since the incidents are part of the same report, I seriously started off thinking, “How could they both get killed in Saitama and then again in Kanagawa?” But sad story anyway, especially for the guy who was just trying to deliver the news to everyone. Warning to anyone getting the idea to make a joke about him ending up in the news: Very bad taste. Let it go. This is a man who could choose to live off his pension but chose to work anyway. Much respect. And the 52-year-old was so close to retirement after all is many years of hard work. Tragic.
