Two police officers were stabbed by a 66-year-old man with an ice pick at his apartment in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Friday morning.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. NHK reported that about two hours before the incident, a taxi driver in Mito City had called police to report that a drunk man would not pay his fare. The man, Yoshio Tanaka, promised to pay the fare if he could go home. Police drove him home, followed by the taxi driver.
When they arrived at Tanaka’s apartment, the taxi driver and the police officers accompanied Tanaka to his apartment so that he could get money to pay for his fare. The two officers removed their knife-proof vests so as not to damage the interior. Once inside, Tanaka turned his back on the police, then swung around and stabbed a 38-year-old sergeant in the left chest and a 37-year-old sergeant in the stomach. The taxi driver called 110 and police rushed to the apartment and arrested Tanaka.
The wounded officers were taken to hospital where doctors said their injuries are not life-threatening.

Huh?

again, utter nonsense.

I don't remember anything. I was drunk.....

These are vests like a waistcoat not like a suit of armour. They are worn for safety not to removed so as not to upset the sensibilities of the local drunk.

What do you mean, they removed their vests?!? Is not like those vests are Cosmonaut suits or something...
Or maybe the guy is literrlay living in a typical show box size apartment where only 1 person can fit on the hallway. But still...

It was nice of the J-Police to try and help. Here, I would have just been arrested, left in the "drunk tank" overnight and then would be sued by the Taxi company in court. This assumes no violence, just refusal to pay.
I'm a happy drunk. Never violent. Violent drunks need a warning "do not give me alcohol" on their forehead or a number ... 2 or 4 or 6 which is the limit for the number of drinks before they become agitated., if that happens before violence. Imagine this world with your nice boss having a "4" tattoo on him and a task-master boss without any number or a "20" tattoo. Wouldn't that help?

Not a fan of a tattoo, but requiring an alcohol ID that can be taken away for excessive drunkenness or acting violent when drunk would help.

I know I was joking and I suspect you were too, but it would make dealing with angry drunks easier for everyone else. Having one more govt card for tracking people isn't something I ever want. That means a list is somewhere and if history has taught us anything, govt lists are a terrible idea.

What are the police doing outside the apartment taking off their police issued apparel in the early morning?
Once the address had been ascertained by the police then they should have left.
The taxi driver could then pursue a civil claim against the passenger for the outstanding payment.

I wonder if the old man told them to take off the vests so as not to cause any damage. Being the simps that they are they acquiesced took off the vests and then the stabbed them! That is the only thing I can think of.

This is unreal. After stabbing two officers, I am surprised he wasn't perforated himself. The restraint of the second groups of responding officers is admirable.

This guy must have lost him mind. Did he panic that he couldn’t pay his fare to the extent that he thought this was the best solution? Hope the officers recovery quickly and this lunatic pays the price for this.
