Police in Fukuoka have taken into custody two girls for beating up a 12-year-old girl and stealing her money in a park in the Kanda neighborhood.
According to police, the two girls, aged 15 and 14, have been charged with assault and battery and larceny. Fuji TV quoted police as saying the two suspects assaulted the younger girl on Oct 31. They stole her handbag containing about 2,500 yen.
The girl told police the pair grabbed her by the hair and violently kicked her in the legs and other parts of her body. Fuji TV said the girl told her parents who contacted police.

I feel bad for all the parties involved. The pressure on being a young girl in Japan must be on a level that I could only imagine. Kids do stupid things sometimes... I would like to see a scenario where all three become friends.. social justice means we correct one another... not punish one another with an eye for an eye. Social restoration hopefully leaves each party with a better sense of improvement.

It's not such big news. It's a timeless and universal crime that will never be stamped out. Not saying we should not try to educate people, but we don't need to over-react emotionally either. Those two children have to learn the hard way perhaps.

The less humanely a society treats its (particularly younger) criminals, the worse a society it becomes. Sweden, which invests hugely in the rehabilitation and reform of her criminals, and adopts an extremely "soft" approach, often ridiculed by the average citizen in less enlightened nations, recently announced the closure of four prisons, due to a lack of customers.
Other countries can't build new (often privatised) fast enough.
While the facts may disappoint the hang 'em and flog 'em, three-strikes-and you're out brigade, that doesn't in any way diminish the truth of them.

You obviously do not have a 12 year old child who was recently beaten and mugged by two older hoodlums.

Under age criminals should be caned as punishment.

What makes the crime so 'petty'? This wasn't a snickers bar from 7-11. If these little specimens get away with this 'petty' mugging, where will they end up?
Good on the victim to not hide it away, as too many do. 'Petty crime' is a misnomer, like 'slightly pregnant'. It's either crime or it isn't. Nip it in the bud. Give the girls a short, sharp shock, and let them make something of their lives.

On the contrary, I think it is very fitting that violence and crime are met with punishment. What would you have society do, wait until they move on to more serious crimes like murder before reacting?

What has that got to do with two girls attacking a younger girl?
I hope these nasty little witches receive a suitable punishment.

I see a "sincere apology" and a "gomenasai" payment by their parents, but no jail time.

Don't care what the scenarios are it doesn't OK assault, battery, and theft.

Why was a 12-yr old carrying a handbag? Was it a Louis Vuitton (or burando neimu something) and getting up the other girls' noses? So many possible scenarios...

If it's not bad enough that all of us need to be on the lookout for bad boys these days... now bad girls are on the rise!! Sad this happened, specially to a 12 year old; glad she found courage to report it. Just hope them girls won't retaliate against the victim again knowing the law can't place them on trial on account of their age.

Good thing that the girl reported

I hope this goes to trial but sadly it probably won't.
