I think many could tell that it was some punk kids that did this and that they would deny intending to kill anyone.

Give them a couple of years in juvy to help them consider the error in their ways.

Hopefully the victim can sue the parents of these two knuckleheads, and not have to deliver newspapers anymore.

Make an example out of them and spread it out through the media. Don't let them go away with a slap on the wrist.

One was quoted as saying, "I wanted to have fun watching a person fall."

For some reason I find this statement from a teenager responsible for this more disturbing than if it had just been a plot to kill someone.

I once hit a wire rope stretched across a parking lot entrance while cycling at full speed. Fortunately, I hit it with my chest and not my throat or face. I'm lucky to be alive. Even if the kids who did this did this had no intention of killing anyone, they are clearly callous morons. Normally, I don't favour locking up young kids, but this pair is clearly dangerous.

this is not so strange. I know people who watch ice hockey just to see players beat each other in the head, and people who watch car racing just for the often fatal accidents.

This is human nature. They should be sentenced to one years full time work in a care home, changing adult diapers and cleaning sheets. All their pay should go to the victim.

that's IF they have any parents.... sadistic kids out at 2am.... a fatherless home at the very least... or just too much overtime to take care of your own family.

Obviously stupid behaviour by the teens, but the charge of 'attempted murder' is nonsense. It is entirely believable that they were a couple of losers looking for a laugh, nothing more sinister than that. Is this childish behaviour equal to a yakuza enforcer slitting the throat of a rival and leaving them to die in a pool of blood? That would actually justify an 'attempted murder' charge.

@goodlucktoyou 'watch'

Watching someone else make mistake and suffer is very different to setting up and committing harm on an innocent bystander.

IMHO, what this story reflect is the complete lack of a moral compass of the suspects. It is not surprising however, where rigid rules (behaviour determined by others) takes priority over morals (behaviour determined by oneself), things will fall through the cracks. You see this in other authoritarian countries too.

Agreed. Sociopaths are less noticeable in authoritarian countries because there is less personal responsibility when there is less freedom.

I had a similar experience to bullfighter above. Someone stretched a rope across a parking lot entrance which was normally my regular cycle route. Threw me off my bike and winded me. Went to the drinks party anyway. Next morning still sore so checked in with the doc, who told me I had a broken arm.

Let's hope the old lady sues the hell out of these kids families. She might not have to do her newspaper run then!

Many years ago one of my friends fell fate from one of these idiots. He was riding a trail bike and some idiot had put barbed wire across the track. It caught him at both elbows and severed the tendons in both arms. He lost the use of most of his fingers and has limited use of his arms. The idiots that did it were never found. These little punks are very lucky they didn’t kill this woman.

This nonsense continues to happen because when it's "kids" under the age of 20, they aren't actually punished or any deterrence sent. What's the motivation for others to not do the same thing if they get a free pass based on age?

Tie the rope to their privates, then stretch the rope across the road - lesson learnt !

No lawsuits here -- we are not in America.

Right. No suit necessary. Their families will pay restitution or never show their face again.

From the comments here this kind of thing seems worryingly common. Perhaps the police are right to throw the book at these idiots to set an example to other half-wits who might be thinking of copying them.

Those capable of adult crimes should be treated as adults . Punishments should act as deterrents or the legal system has little meaning.

Yes, it is. Last it was in the news, those kids from Yokota airforce base left that motorcyclist with a cracked skull. If I remember correctly, she was even wearing a helmet.

The really sad part of this aside from kids getting pleasure out of someone’s pain and injury (and possible death and how parents and society has somehow allowed this to happen) is the fact that a 77 year old woman is delivering newspapers at two a.m. Bet she has no other choice, other than starving to death. I don’t think that I could do this and I am only 59!

Three other cases in twenty comments, all kids pranking, but as you would imagine bad outcomes , broken bones and tendon damage, no one died, no intended victim, a year in juvenile detention, not attempted murder.

"I wanted to have fun watching a person fall."

The two students are believed to have been watching from a distance.

These juveniles obviously have a sadistic streak, as well as personality disorders.

A custodial sentence, with theraphy attached, I think is approptriate.
