In Japan, people more often refer to school years rather than age. "Nan nen sei" is far more common a question than "Nan sai"

I don't understand the complaint about the headline calling here a high school girl. She was a high school girl. That means that most probably she was a teenager. I don't understand what the flaw is.

There is more to this story, I'm sure. Posting a picture on social media seems to be petty provocation for murder. It was wrong, but the act of murder must have some deeper cause, though it might be related to the picture. I hope a more developed story comes out.

In Japan, laws apply to minors differently if they are students or not.

As education is mandatory only until JHS, the fact that she was a student and not a worker changes how the law applies in many instances.

If you commit a crime against a student vs a non-student can have different outcomes.

She probably was. I hope they show those bully faces and face their punishments. However, I'm sure the punishment will be no where near what that poor young girl might have experience for long periods of time.

Hokkaido is not a city nor a state.

Hokkaido is a prefecture, the biggest prefecture in Japan, with an area similar to Ireland.

It is the 8th most populated prefecture of Japan, and has about 35 cities, 125 towns and 15 villages, including the 4th most populated designated city of Sapporo.

In other words, Hokkaido is very big, with a lot of people and different places that it is not that weird to think many stories coming from Hokkaido.
