Police in Fukuoka city have arrested a 20-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of attempted murder after he stabbed five family members at their home.

According to police, Jukiya Iwasaki went on a stabbing rampage after a family dispute at their municipal apartment complex in Hakata Ward at around 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Fuji TV reported. A neighbor heard screams and called 110.

Iwasaki’s 42-year-old mother was the most seriously injured after being slashed in the head. Police said Iwasaki’s teenage sister, grandmother, 64, uncle, 35, and a female relative, 40, also sustained knife wounds. The victims were all taken to hospital but their wounds are not life-threatening.

Following the attack, police found Iwasaki near the crime scene with visible injuries on both arms. After his arrest, he was quoted by police as saying he “doesn’t remember” what happened.

@Sir Bentley,

it was the best excuse available to him - as it was 7:15am so the "I was drunk" excuse was probably unavailable.

He could have tried, "I hadn't had my morning coffee (or smoke) yet" or "I woke up in a bad mood" or "I slept poorly last night" - but I guess each of those contains some kind of implied admission that he did it, which the "doesn't remember" excuse avoids.

Gee whiz! I sure wish I could use that excuse in daily situations and get away with it!

Sure you don't remember what happened -BUT- good thing is you'll spent many years in prison to help you remember ....

@foreignbrotherhoodarmy

He probably has mental issues and if anything should be locked up in a ward. I come from Europe and it never ceases to baffle me the primitive mindset of Americans. - Lock up and throw away the key.

Perhaps not listen to someone that comes from the country that has the least amount of free people per capita, that has some of the highest re-offending rates as well was violent criminals.

I don't blame Japan for being vary of immigrants when people like you wander around. There's many flaws with Japan, but bringing in more of that kind of mindset will just degrade the overall safety, trust and way of life that Japan has enjoyed for many years.

For a 20 years old man, to be first unemployed, second living off his parents income in a crowded city apartment, using a deadly weapon to attack or even "Defend" himself regardless of started the fight tells me this is a troubled man in need of help, possibly ill and needs to be evaluated.

I have never understood how someone can stab 5 people in a apartment. That means while one person is getting stabbed 4 others are literally just standing there! Fight for your life

In real life, many knife attacks happen so quickly that the victims are cut before they know what is going on. And in this case, many of the stabbies where chidren. What do you expect them to do? Wrestle with a knife-wielding adult??

There are many objects one can grab in a house! A chair? A table? Heck even throw a pillow...do something!...don't just stand there!!

Some of you people amaze me.

But we are a good guide as to why in many countries the police can't reveal such details prior to a trial. Imagine us on a jury!

**Some of you people amaze me. How can you be so judgemental over a case/incident which we all know very little about? We have no idea what drove this young man to take such drastic action. Did the report not also say the man was injured? Can you just dismiss that? Maybe the rest of the family were attacking him first? We don't know! You've just been given a small amount of info yet you've already decided the punishment. Amazing!* I agree as readers we only know what we are being told through the media. I can think of a **NUMBER of reason why he probably attacked his family members. If I were to give it a say I would blame it on MENTAL ILLNESS. I say this because no normal person I don't think would have a problem with their entire family to go to great lengths to attack them as described in the article. Perhaps the family have done all they could possibly do to understand and deal with the man's problems but sooner or later they too can get tired and when he perhaps didn't get his way as before he attacked one and then the other tried to intervene and this lead to a chain of events where everyone is getting attacked and having defensive injuries from both sides. Again I am just speculating but I have seen this happen before. MENTAL ILLNESS*** is something no one wants to talk about and truly don't understand but we are quick to blame quilt on someone with this illness. In this case I can truly believe Iwasaki saying he “doesn’t remember” what happened. I would want to say his family didn't want or expect something like this to happen, if anything they have probably supported him but dealing with someone who has a mental condition especially one with anger management problems can be tiresome, one can only take so much!

Did the report not also say the man was injured? Can you just dismiss that?

Most likely from the victims defending themselves. Or, possibly, from self-harm.

Maybe the rest of the family were attacking him first? We don't know!

Highly unlikely, as he would have used that as his defense, not the Japan Standard "I don't remember".

It's totally possible that he doesn't remember. But that doesn't mean he should be free to walk around. Quite the opposite.

like your optimism mate but pride comes before the fall doesn’t translate.

Ah, the good old "I dont remember". The eternal runner-up to the favourite "I was drunk".

In a country where problems are not usually met with sympathy the mentally unstable in Japan are not given sufficient attention.

These episodes occur far too frequently...

How is this "suspicion attempted of murder", surely 'suspicion' required an alternate, like, I suspect this meal may be nice, but is may be bad. What's the alternate here? He may have wanted to just annoy his family members and not kill them?? This is crazy!

Japanese people who are resorting to violent behavior need to be studied, and psychoanalyzed, in order to prevent future occurrences by others . . . .

Beyond fortunate that no victim has life threatening injuries. Knifes can be very dangerous weapons, but I doubt the same results would have happened if the guy had easy access to a gun.

He’s sticking to the typical japanese excuse “I don’t remember”. Well luckily for his “family” he won’t be living with them anymore. Lock this nutcase up, deprive him of all social interaction, keep him heavily medicated, then let nature take its course.
