About 2,000 "Akizuki" pears were stolen straight off the trees from an orchard in Shimotsuma city on Sunday. Police said the theft was discovered Monday by the 66-year-old farmer who owns the field.

Police said the pears are estimated to be worth 300,000 yen.

I expect he had a few choice words to say upon waking up to find this.

think you will find 150 yen closer to the real figure.

Yep.

That's a lot of pears to suddenly just up and vanish.

I am not a big fan of pears, the mrs likes them but when our local rice farmer told us how they have to spray these things about 30times a season & he NEVER eats them I have avoided them & will only partake when they are offered when visiting people but only have a couple pieces.

haha.. just look for the trail of pear cores. Should lead to a rather bloated guy barely able to move. Easy catch!

On a more serious note, I hope the farmer will be compensated for his crop. Poor fella has probably been hard at work for months. And at 66... It wouldn't have been easy!

My god, stealing pears, what is this world coming to?

the yaks must really be hard up with the economy being so bad, stealing pears?

"All your pear are belong to us"

It's unforgivable to steal pears.

Wonder why people stole them? Fruit here is way too expensive. Also the farmers do such a nice job of wrapping them while they are still on the tree. Go figure someone would swipe them.

Not sure about that - the pears grow all by themselves. The hard work is the picking and someone else did that for him!

I love pears but I swear it wasn't me. I may steal a pear, orange, apple or whatnot if I happen to walk past a tree but certainly not 2000 of them. This must have been some sort of an organized theft for re-sale because one person could not pick nor consume that many pears.

I have to ask - did the thieves steal the partridge too?

I am not familiar with the Akizuki variety - are they more like western pears or Japanese nashi?

Freaking squrrels got all our pears too.

“Freaking squrrels got all our pears too.”

I wonder if it was the same gang of Korean or Chinese squirrels that got these pears?

No, not yaks, this would have been too much like hard work for them.

"Fruit here is way too expensive"

Yes. A pack of 4 nashi in my local supermarket costs 498 yen.

"Freaking squirrels got all our pears"

Are you sure they weren't racoons?

Wow. I was accosted by a Nigerian in Roppongi last night who whispered "psst, Bro, got some pears yo, know what I'm sayin' homeboy? " He ushered me into one of the back alleys, led me to his mini-van, and lo and behold, inside there were several crates full of pears. At the time I thought "pears" was some sort of drug code - but now it's all adding up!

Burakumin - So, did you buy any of the stolen pears the Nigerian was selling?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

No, I didn't want to get messed up in that scene. One of those sweet, juicy pears would be all it'd take before they'd be pushin' peaches and Fuji apples on me at 500 yen a hit.

BurakuminDes: wise choice! Some cop could have pulled you over for a 'pear test'.

Roppongi is just the place to see a nice juicy pear.

i wonder if this even came up in tv news..
