22-year-old mother arrested for tossing newborn baby into sea

Police have arrested a 22-year-old woman on suspicion of abandoning the body of her newborn boy by tossing it into the sea at Susaki Port in Susaki City, Kochi Prefecture.

According to police, Tomoka Morimitsu, who said she works as a chef, gave birth alone at her apartment on Aug 4, Sankei Shimbun reported. She placed the infant, with his umbilical cord still attached, inside a plastic bag, and took him to the port where she dropped him in the water.

Morimitsu visited Susaki City Hall’s Health and Welfare Center the next day. Accompanied by a public health nurse, she then turned herself in at police station and was formally charged on Thursday morning.

Police said Morimitsu told them she became scared after seeing the news about her baby’s body being found and so she decided to turn herself in.

Police said an autopsy will be held to determine the cause of the baby's death.

Needed help but she could't find it. if there are places where pregnant girls can go to for real help and counseling this could have been avoided, Sad. Often young women get pregnant but have a abortion due to anxiety and LACK of support.

No words.

Why are people so stupid?

There are always other options.

So sad.

Compassion, I hope. As always, we don't know what was happening in this young person's life.

I hope she receives the counselling she deserves and is released without charge.

I don´t know. That was my feeling about the other case recently, where the police chased down a woman who had dropped the baby at the door of a nursery school to be found in the morning, and arrested her.

But in this case? Dumping it in the ocean? That is a different story.

Indeed she may not have killed her baby.

Nonetheless, do you throw your stillbirth baby at sea ?

Indeed, mental issues and having a baby on its own for ladies is despised by society.

But working shows you cannot be that in despair.

Otherwise, any reason would be good to kill your infant from human point of view. Abortion is OK, not full grown babies. And she knew it.

@ klutzman et al - let's not cast stones? So it's not her fault, or there was an acceptable reason for throwing a newborn into the ocean?

Baby murderer

Lest we forget there's a man involved here as well. Let's not cast stones at the woman without knowing the full situation.

Don't feel too sorry for the witch; she only turned herself in after she found out the baby's body had been found. She's only sorry she likely would have been caught if she hadn't turned herself in. RIH.

Apparently, some who comment here have not had the good fortune to have been visited by absolute desperation and survived the experience. Desperation on the level we see here often results in train delays or mashed pedestrians or, as here, in another helpless collateral victim of poor public services and conscienceless administrator mentalities. And any little joy this woman could have ever hoped for in her life is gone forever. She will NEVER forget... How can anyone view such obvious profound tragedy in other lives and see ONLY the inside of their own head?

People do weird things under stress. This doesn't mean she should not be accountable, but mental health is a very difficult area.

No they don't, not this weird. Being under stress doesn't affect your cognitive abilities and moral awareness. You still know right from wrong, as much as you would normally at least. Stress is the typical train molester response..

I don't get this. No matter how much distress you are under you don't kill a baby or throw a baby's body on the sea.

Given that we all agree that you don't throw babies into the sea, dead or alive, what was her mental state at the time?

Post partum psycosis. Or maybe just a monster. Who knows! Poor baby.

22 years old.. gave birth at home alone...became scared after seeing news.

Personal development issues meet social problems ~

Sad

It’s short article. She’s been charged with abandoning the baby’s body, not murder. Presumably there’ll be an autopsy to discover the cause of death. If turns out to be drowning then no doubt a murder charge will follow. That said the young woman was clearly in distress. I doubt many here have given birth alone at home. Try to show some compassion. Or at least leave it to the judges to pass sentence.

People here are constantly jumping to conclusions! It does not say in the article that she killed the baby! They will investigate the cause of death first! It could have been stillbirth.... Try comprehending the article before making comments. It seems people reading the comments and not the article, as soon as someone mentioned "killed", everyone after follows that conclusion.

I believe there is only one baby hatch in Japan. In Kumamoto. Adoption is still taboo in Japan for some reason.

Where is love ?

In that case, where it seems she had clear mind of what to do, she can be called a murderer (infanticide).

It looks like it does not bother much Japanese that such things happen often in a country whith dire demography.

I feel judgmental comments here is just another form of cyberbullying, even if unintentional.

We don't know the circumstances of the situation. Most people don't give birth at home, so there's a clear lack of support. I would first treat her as a victim.

Always at a loss for words whenever I read about these sorts of things. Very sad. I grieve for the overall loss of these situations.

Why couldn't she toss it into the baby hatch? Why kill it?

13 ( +14 / -1 )

Start with sterilization, then lock her up.

So many women (men too) in Japan desperately want to adopt a baby. Its so sad that women resort to these measures to dispose of a baby.

14 ( +16 / -2 )

Was she shark fishing?

There’s not enough love in Japan!

-18 ( +5 / -23 )

is "tossing" the best choice of words?

3 ( +8 / -5 )

OMG... I certainly hope that the baby wasn't alive when she did that. What a monster!

10 ( +11 / -1 )

There's a declining birth rate, why can't they open a baby drop place instead of this happening?
