A 23-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly beating his one-year-old son about the head, which left the child unconscious and in critical condition, police said.
According to police, the suspect, Yoshiaki Sano, a company employee, struck his son’s head with his fist at their apartment in Tsurugashima, Saitama Prefecture, at around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Fuji TV reported. The boy was taken to hospital where he remained unconscious on Wednesday.
Sano lives with his wife, 29, and three children. All five family members were home when the incident occurred. However, police said Sano hit the boy, his second-oldest son, when the two of them were alone in one room. The boy's mother called 119 when she saw that there was something wrong with her son.
Police said Sano has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying, “I hit him on the head because I got irritated with him."
A neighbor told local media, “I would occasionally hear the husband shouting, ‘Shut up!’” Another nearby resident recalled, “I remember the wife saying that her husband wasn’t the type to look after their kids.”
Police are looking into whether Sano abused his two other children.

But when I was a kid, being whipped by the belt, slapped or spanked by parents was just plain ol' discipline. Same thing happens today and it is called abuse. Of course many of those who have never been hit by their parents growing up are the first ones crying abuse.
This case though of hitting a 1 year old child on the head until they are unconscious is 100% abusive and attempted murder like one person said here.

Yeah, of course, this scumbag is a total POS! However, I cannot count the amount of times I have seen Japanese fathers (and mothers) dish out the good old smack in the head as some kind of pathetic attempt at asserting dominance over a young child. I saw something the other day that I found really disturbing. I was standing on the train in front of a 7 or 8 year old girl. She was happily playing Nintendo DS and not doing any harm. She was happy and swung her leg, which touched my pants. I didn't care at all. However, her mother (by definition only) gave her a hard thump in the arm for touching my pants. A few minutes later, she touched my pants again. This time her so-called 'mother' gave her a really hard 'clenched fist' punch in the shoulder. I know it hurt her because I could see the look in her face. She held back her tears and I guess I should have moved at this point. However, I didn't. Then, maybe two stops later her foot touched my pants again. And, this beast of a woman grabbed a large chunk of skin on the girl's leg and pinched and twisted it until the poor girl screamed. I just glared at the woman and said, "What the truck are you doing?" (in Japanese) I couldn't handle it anymore and moved to a different part of the carriage and glared at this beast of a woman for the rest of my trip. Too many Japanese parents abuse their kids without even knowing they are abusing them. They just use any means they feel fit to intimidate and hurt their kids and call it discipline. This guy is exactly the same! I do not condone any kind of physical punishment for kids. I was physically punished as a kid and only learned that my father is a violent wanker that will hurt me, which is what all kids learn from physical discipline. Stop hitting your kids people! It's not necessary! Try talking to them instead. You'll find it much more effective.
