Police in Yotsukaido, Chiba Prefecture, have arrested a 23-year-old woman on suspicion of murder after she threw her newborn son from the second floor of a building.

According to police, they were contacted at around 11 a.m. Tuesday by staff at a group home for children, who said that a naked baby’s body had been found behind the two-story building, Sankei Shimbun reported. The infant was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Chihiro Saito, a part-time employee who lives at the group home, has admitted dropping her baby from the second floor but has so far given no motive. Police said the baby was born sometime after Dec 10.

Having a child is the ultimate responsibility, and when a mother is left on her own forced to care for an infant with no experience or direct help it becomes a major source of stress and anxiety for these young women, and the result is what we got here.

rip to this angel...such tragic news but almost daily here :( :(

This was super close to where I live. You don’t just drop a baby from the balcony……so tragic. Hope the baby rests in peace and the mother gets a proper sentencing.

Most women after given birth either have baby blues or postpartum depression. Baby blues is when they may feel anxious, confused, or have trouble eating or sleeping. Is very common and up to 80% of new moms have it and it will go away on its own. About 13% of new mothers experience postpartum depression, which is more serious and lasts longer. This is why after birth, you must give her as much support as possible. The father and the baby mother grandparents must play a huge role trying to aid the mother and help get her back on her feet as fast as possible. i think the pandemic made things a lot worse.

@Chris J. T.

”Way past the postpartum dysphoria”?

Have you birthed a child? What do you mean by “she forgot about the birth experience.” It sounds sexist and misogynistic.

Maybe you should concern yourself with asking the questions that matter that could make a real difference such as, where is the father or where can these young women can go to get the proper help and assistance they need

Take a second to think.

Well said @Aneed Moorehead!

Once again when facts are few experts are many.

Jesus Christ…not a headline I was hoping to read today.

Seriously, does Japan not have baby boxes or safe haven laws? In the US, you can take a newborn to a hospital or fire house and drop them off anonymously. No questions asked, no charges levied. Free and clear. I can’t imagine how many lives something like this might save.

So much for the mother child bond.

@Aneed...

Complains about sexism and misogyny and then gives us the "where's the father" excuse

Very true and completely unaware of the reality and repercussions of their actions and that it can haunt them for the rest of their lives.

Headline really should include the word "killing", not just "throwing".

sad.feel sorry abt baby.

Just reading the article headline made me flinch. I don't want to condemn her for her actions because I haven't the foggiest about her current situation, mental, physical, financial or otherwise, but I will blame the lack of resources and support for individuals in these situations. I know Japan has some resources out there for cases like these but for some reason, a lot of people lack the knowledge that they exist let alone how to access it. More transparency is needed so that people know where they can go to ask for help if and when they need it.

reading news like this is perfect for ruining your day...

My gosh, why not giving to anyone or leave at the hospital with a note. Is she has a devil inside for throwing the baby?

Sadly, mothers are sometimes depressed and emotionally disoriented after a birth.

Maybe bringing new life into the world should be more

of a celebration to be shared ?

@Aneed Morehead.

You can tell me to the review facts all you like and till the cows come home. NOPE!

There is no way in hell. Dropping a new born baby can be chalked up to some mental disorder.

However in turn. I can admit when I am wrong.

Ok, so I take back what wrote about the PPD. She very well may have been suffering from the chemical imbalance in her brain caused by the depression. And I know a great deal about the disorder. @Aneed Morehead.

There is moral code instilled in each and everyone one of us. If proven she new the difference between right or wrong. Its murder. And in this country. You do the swingers dance up high for it. And by God let her swing for taking life.

Where are my I (well said's) and (atta boy)????

@Miko exactly.

Post partum, hormones, stress, blah blah. All excuses period, still murder period, There is no acceptable excuse period.

I agree that there is no acceptable excuse period. But if she was not able to recognize that what she was doing was wrong, then I think she needs treatment, not punishment.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Really? Ok yes what she has done is against society's norms but do people expect an answer? We don't know what was in this women head. After child birth a women's hormones are thrown into disarray. Yes many women have had babies and they didn't kill their kids but everyone is different mind body and soul. There could be a number of factors in her life that are more personal and right now she probably hasn't thought about what she has done. Perhaps when she spends time in jail and have to think about what she has done to her own child who was innocent only then she will know. We can sit here and be monitor lawyer/police but it will not change a thing. Its a cruel world, and yes she needed some help, but where is that help in Japan because this isn't the first time we have read incidents like this nor will it be the last.

Time for a suspended sentence.

“ […] gets proper *help ”

That is pretty barbaric. dropping a child from second story balcony. And well past the postpartum dysphoria. Too many times children have had to suffer or pay with there lives under a parent that brought them in to the world kicking and screaming. She just forgot all about the 9 months carrying. Or the birth experience. Children in this country need protection.

SIC SICKO...Rot in Jail.

-6 ( +11 / -17 )

Ok a lot of judgement here, I want to think this is the 21st century where this woman can be helped rather than punished.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Should have been sterilized at birth!

-9 ( +11 / -20 )

And well past the postpartum dysphoria.

No. It was a newborn infant. That's exactly when postpartum depression happens.
