Police in Hino City, Tokyo, have arrested a 23-year-old woman on suspicion of corpse abandonment after the body of a newborn boy was found inside a suitcase hidden in a closet.

According to police, Chihiro Fukushima, a part-time worker, has admitted to the charge. Kyodo News reported that Fukushima lives with her parents.

At around noon on Sunday, Fukushima’s mother noticed an unusual odor coming from her daughter’s room. When she went to see what it was, she discovered the baby’s corpse inside a suitcase in the closet and called 110.

Police quoted Fukushima as saying she placed the baby inside the suitcase after giving birth at the end of May.

Can people stop commenting without consideration. There are worldwide cases that women get pregnant without realizing it. Also nobody knows what situation this woman or mother of the woman are. In Japan you can have a house which has separation for families living together.

The quality of comments is declining a lot on Japan today.

Mother was always suspicious when it comes to their children but she did not get suspicious when her daughter get pregnant and gave birth? Are they live together? Or a different apartment?

I don't get it! Fukushima’s mother noticed an unusual odor coming from her daughter’s room. When she went to see what it was, she discovered the baby’s corpse inside a suitcase in the closet. What I don't understand is and it is not written in the article about the mother not noticing the daughter being pregnant and then not being pregnant. I can't believe the mother having a child herself could not notice a change in her daughters appearance after giving birth at the end of May. I guess the mothers nose is better than her eyesight.

Not sure it's abandonment when it's her suitcase in her closet. Surely there's a better defined charge to put against her.

I’m all for baby hatches and easy abortions.

They're not given ANY Choices, like those mentioned here, that are available in other countries.

23 and just didn’t know how to tell mom or, was planning to stash the body somewhere later? That happens too as NHK TV noon today preliminary report of another dead baby body has been found in a locker Chitose Station, Hokkaido.

What is going on in the minds of these young women in Japan?

Odd that her mother never noticed that her daughter was pregnant.

I read these stories about this daily. Japan should better support options for women like offering the abortion pill and not having unnecessary loops for the women to jump through for abortion: requiring the father to sign, showing mental or financial issue.

Just saw the women on TV. She is a bit sized so maybe it was difficult to see if she was with child.

So the mother of the 23 y/o lives with her and for nine straight months she never noticed her daughter was pregnant and gave birth. Wow!

OMG...in the CLOSET ?

Take it where someone could have FOUND it, at least.

A vicious circle.

RIP
