24-year-old man arrested for fatally abusing 4-year-old stepson

Police in Sapporo said Monday they have arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of fatally abusing his 4-year-old stepson at their apartment last week.

According to police, the suspect, Akira Miyakita, punched his stepson Kaito in the stomach at around 1:30 a.m. on Sept 17, Fuji TV reported. When Kaito's mother checked on him about 20 minutes later, she noticed he wasn't breathing and called 119.

Kaito was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m. due to internal hemorrhaging, police said.

The hospital notified police who arrested Miyakita on Sunday.

Police said Kaito's arms had bruises on them, leading them to believe he had been beaten on more than one occasion.

Miyakita was quoted by police as saying he was irritated and lost his temper.

Oh, geez!! What the frack is wrong with people?!!

I hope they through the book at Miyakita.... but these guys always seem to get such lenient treatment for these sort of crimes.

I will reserve comment on the mother. Don't have enough facts. I am just reminded of what the experts always say about getting out before its too late. If Kaito had been beaten on more than one occasion, then obviously that raises questions.

RIP, Kaito! I am so sorry you had to endure such pain and misery in your short life.

This cowardly brute needs to go away for a long time!

He doesn't deserve the title "man" just put a "24 year old male"... Real men don't hurt either women or children.

Miyakita was quoted by police as saying he was irritated and lost his temper.

Is this statement a defence or an offense? He just admitted to being a violent coward that beats on kids. I read so many of these violent stories of people, both young and old that just snap and take out their aggression on kids it really churns my guts! Children are a gift, not a burden!

Wow, just wow! How could someone do that to a small child? Cruel.

A 4 year old up at 1.30am?? Shouldn't he have been asleep?

Toddlers and infants do sometimes wake up in the middle of the night - they had a bad dream, need to potty, are too hot, too cold, can't settle, the adults are making a noise/playing loud music, there was a loud crack of thunder, etc. There are a hundred and one reasons why a 4-year-old might not be asleep at 1:30 in the morning. Being a poor sleeper shouldn't be a death sentence, though. Poor little mite.

RIP Kaito, little guy. Punching a 4yo...speechless.

Mom has got to be a battered "girlfriend" Who else would "just check on the child later" So sad that women/men would risk their own children's safety for the comforts of an "animal" like Miyakita.
