26-year-old mother gets 10 years over death of 2-year-old daughter

The Sendai District Court in Miyagi Prefecture has sentenced a 26-year-old woman to 10 years in prison after she was convicted of parental neglect resulting in the death of her two-year-old daughter last year.

According to the court ruling, Risa Tsuchiya, left her daughter Hinata at home alone for nine days from June 21, during which time Tsuchiya stayed with a male friend, Sankei Shimbun reported. Hinata died sometime between June 27 and June 30.

When Tsuchiya, who works at a bar, returned home at around 11 a.m. on June 30, she noticed that Hinata wasn’t breathing and called 119. The child was confirmed dead at the scene. An autopsy revealed that Hinata, who was found naked, died of hypothermia. She weighed 8.6 kilograms at the time of her death.

After her arrest, Tsuchiya was quoted by police as saying she was mentally worn out from child-rearing and just wanted to be by herself. Tsuchiya and her daughter lived alone.

It's not just her who should be in prison. I'd lock away the "male acquaintance," the biological father who presumably couldn't care less what happened to his daughter

That’s quite a collection of unconfirmed assumptions you have there. We have no idea who the male acquaintance is or what relationship, if any, he has to the deceased.

10 years feels light, but it seems to be right in line with precedent. The man who abused and killed his 10-year old daughter got 12.

would it make a difference if it were a male criminal?

No, because murder is murder.

But some people seem to fixate on violent punishment for women. Especially Japanese women.

How is it that the charge was not murder?

Leaving a young child alone for an extended period would certainly result in its death...

What is wrong with these people? and only 10 years?? Well, I hope she is "neglected" in prison, too.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

She deserves the death penalty.

Why do you want women criminals tortured and killed?

would it make a difference if it were a male criminal?

Oh... maybe the wrong question to ask

and the idiots who think her killers should get a suspended sentence. Stupidity counts as a tragedy

A very emotive topic. But I'd rather be an idiot than a killer by proxy.

It's all to easy to vent on the guilty than question why this happened and how society fails vulnerable people, victims and abusers alike.

Why do you want women criminals tortured and killed? Is it to satisfy your bloodlust or do you see it as a deterrent?

There are two victims of this tragedy

yeah, the poor little girl, and the idiots who think her killers should get a suspended sentence. Stupidity counts as a tragedy

So absolutely horrific. I hope this woman never gets pregnant again.

She'll be 36 years old when she gets out. Enough time to enjoy the rest of her life.

Don't want your kid? put them in the baby hatch, don't let them die!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Thats as good as an premeditated murder.. She deliberately left the child to starve for 9 days.. I bet she didn't wanted the child in the 1st place..

Should be a suspended sentence.

There are two victims of this tragedy.

The sentence should be life. Also, where is the father? He should be take some responsibility, it's his daughter too.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Why even bother returning after nine days? That sense of guilt should’ve been triggered after 12 hours away from your daughter, who was home alone crying from fear and starvation. This monster deserves the same punishment: no food, water or light for 9 days.

Can't even start to fathom the reasoning of why she just didn't try her best to find the daughter a better home and future if she was so tired of raising her own child. Sad all the way around.

Where could she have gotten help? Is there a city or prefecture office that could assist in taking care of a baby? If there is, does every new mother and father get information on how to contact this office?

I’m asking hoping that future mothers or fathers who become tired taking of their children will contact those offices.

Also, if she couldn’t take care of a child for two years, imagine how rundown she’d be in 16 more years.

Please lock her in her cell and lose the key for 9 days.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

What kind of idiot leaves a two-year old child alone for nine days?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

I couldn’t have cared less and simply abandoned my kid...why?

What’s Wrong ?

Tsuchiya was quoted by police as saying she was mentally worn out from child-rearing and just wanted to be by herself.

Well, maybe she will get solitary confinement! Win...?

I remember this story and reading it again now brings back tears to my eyes. Just thinking how this baby died alone from hunger in a country where food is plentiful rips at my heart strings. She was 2 years old! I wish I heard her crying! She'd still be here today. I can't even think of leaving my 5 year old without food or water for 9 hours! I shouldn't be crying at my desk. Or even going somewhere and leaving him at home alone even if its right down the street!

As for the mother, she wanted to be alone? Now she surely will be. The prison officers should decorate her cell with 400 pictures of her baby's body as they found her where she last rested. 10 years? For being selfish like that resulting in the death of your baby? Japan court system, I am so ashamed!

She should have gotten the number of years that Hinata couldn't live. If the average for Japanese women is about 86 or whatever, the "mother" should have gotten 84 years in jail.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

It's not just her who should be in prison. I'd lock away the "male acquaintance," the biological father who presumably couldn't care less what happened to his daughter, a few more relatives and some criminally useless social workers for good measure.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

And none of her friends, family, neighbors or co-workers had any idea what was going on? Really?

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Very light sentence! What she did was intentionally at least 30 years fair enough.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

She deserves life, but as sad as this sounds, 10 years is a lot for Japan, a country that either gives a suspended sentence or three years for such crimes

1 ( +7 / -6 )

10 years is not enough... the kid was 2 years old! so sad!
