26-year old single mother arrested for inviting high school boy home

Age difference might not matter much in romance between adults, but things can head south real quick when one side is below 18 years old.

On Dec 24, a 26-year old woman was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping a 16-year old high school boy in Hyogo Prefecture, but has claimed that she merely invited him to her apartment.

Their relationship had been going on for some time as the boy’s mother had furiously lodged a police report and a complaint to his school in September, describing the woman as repeatedly calling their home hoping to lure him into her house. The student had confirmed at that time that nothing sexual occurred between the two of them.

He also promised not to go to her house without express permission from his parents.

But things took a sudden turn when he approached the woman one day, saying he was cutting ties with his family. He then stayed in her apartment from 4 p.m. Dec 22 to 4:50 a.m. Dec 23, which alarmed his mother and led to the woman’s arrest for suspected kidnapping.

“I let him in since he told me he was having problems. There was no involuntary confinement at all,” she reportedly said.

The woman was released the next day.

According to website Livedoor News, the 26-year-old is a single mother of two whose dream was to enter the entertainment industry. Japanese netizens took to the internet to voice their conflicting opinions:

“Of course it’s forbidden. What did she think would happen?”

“I think the dude was just looking for sex, but the woman was looking for love.”

“Did she think she was safe just because she’s a woman?”

“Both of them need to conduct themselves better.”

“That isn’t kidnapping at all.”

Although other underage-related offenses are easier to prove and identify, this case is much more ambiguous as no illegal confinement or sexual contact was ever confirmed.

If a man had kept a 16-year old girl overnight, would people’s reactions be the same?

That is one lucky boy.

Yeah, lucky that someone got him away before that headcase could sink her claws into him any more. And yes, I'd say the same if the genders were reversed. 26, single mom, who wanted a future in the 'entertainment industry'?

Yup... run, Taro-kun. Run.

even if he went very willingly it's still kidnapping because the offense of kidnapping includes the act of luring

A horny young woman is chasing your teenage son, and you believed him when he said there's nothing sexual going on?

The student had confirmed at that time that nothing sexual occurred between the two of them.

Oh well then. As if he would admit it if something did happen.

The intro seems to suggest that we need to have a general 5-10 year gap limit, regardless of age (ie if you're 36, you can date anyone age 31-41).

No actually "luring" is considered a sex crime. In this case it is a 26 yr old woman who would have "lured" the minor into her home.

Definition of Luring a Minor

Luring a minor is a criminal offense committed by an adult, 21 or older, who tries to lure a minor, under 18, away from their home. Since luring a minor by an adult is usually for the purpose of sexual activities this is considered a sex crime.

But since there is no evidence there was any sexual contact, and since he was free to come and go as he pleased there is no kidnapping either.

Yeah it's creepy that a 26 year old woman wants a 16yr old boy, but it's no less creepy than the reverse, which happens all to often here and people dont do jack!

Why all the outrage! (sarcasm) This happens all the time when it's a guy looking for a girl here, and this one is mild...26yr old to 16.....typically it's a middle-aged bar-coded hair geek that goes after the "young ones"

If the woman had been in her 40's, this would likely have been a non-issue. Her story of wanting to help out would have been bought completely, but people don't want to believe that a 26 year old can have the same feelings of wanting to help another human.

As much as it sounds like an exciting night for the teenager, not everything has to be sexual.

She deserves a light warning to be more careful, but more importantly, she deserves thanks.

@ yubaru - one of the elements of the offense of kidnapping is luring.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

it doesn't matter what the intent of the luring was, it's still kidnapping. if she kidnapped him intending to have sex with him, then it is also a sex crime

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

do you know at this moment what her intent was once she got him in her house can you prove it

2 ( +5 / -3 )

maybe she needed help rearranging the furniture

I don't think a 26 year old being interested in a 16 year old kid is really all that out of the ordinary. Young teachers in a classroom with healthy younger people are sometimes going to feel attraction towards some of those younger kids.

That doesn't make it right; persons in a position of authority have a responsibility to maintain a level of professionalism which most definitely involves not having any kind of physical relationship with the students over whom they have authority. Such an offense must most definitely be punished. This is not a line we can afford to let be crossed, as that only makes the line more blurry and easier to cross by others in the future.

I'm going to admit however, that when it comes to the harm aspect, I have a total double standard on this issue. I think that by a significant degree, more often it will be more damaging to female students than it is to male. This is not an absolute - it will always depend on the student in question. Some male students will be damaged by such a relationship, and some female students won't.

When I was 17, I had a relationship with a woman a number of years older than me, though she was not my teacher. It was great, and I still have great memories of her. I realized as of recent that this actually was illegal. I hadn't considered it at the time, but I was a minor. I most definitely did not suffer any harm from that relationship though. Conversely it actually gave me a lot of confidence going into life.

It's unfortunate that an adult letting a child requesting help into their home can be considered as kidnapping. That's not necessarily in reference to this particular case, as it would appear that there is some history with this teacher and child/family. But other 'kidnapping' incidents have come to light in the past.

I was thinking about how I would deal with the purely honest situation where a child showed up asking for shelter (one of my kids' friends maybe). I think letting the child in, then calling a lawyer (maybe quietly) would be prudent. It may be that the police should be notified right away or something.

If she really was only helping out a runaway teen, I see nothing wrong. However it seems like her incessant attempts to contact him and his promise to not meet her without parental consent drove him to sever ties with his family, making her the problem, not the solution.

When I was around 16, I ran away from home for a couple of days. It was some stupid teenager vs parents thing. Nothing serious, but when you are a teenager, it’s part of life experience. I was lucky to stay with an older friend and had no sexual relationship.

people are judging this situation without knowing the facts. Did his mother abuse him mentally? Force him to do homework until 1am? Treat like a precious baby? Take away his internet gaming? There could be so many parameters.

arresting her will negatively impact her 2 children.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

do you know at this moment what her intent was once she got him in her house can you prove it

No. No one can show her true intention either way. The best we have to go on is her actions and as there was no sexual contact, we should work on the presumption that they were honest.

No big deal. He was 16 and she 26.

Doesn't sound any different from my teenage years' friends and some of their relationships.

He could come and go as he pleased and wasn't confined. Not kidnapping to me.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

She was trying to get him to come over. For what, so he could tell her his A-B-C's? Fix some popcorn for her? Watch a little TV? Play Pac-Man?

I've actually known a few cases of this in my own class in HS. Sometimes the woman was a teacher but sometimes (as in this case) not. 'Looking for love'.  One side isn't.

She is hoping to 'enter the entertainment industry' - what kind? Does she have a videocams at home, and **what did they do? **Make a movie?

I've known adult people in school and in the service who dated teenagers and whether the adult was male or female it's always been the same - SEX.

In the US Military Code of Military Justice, sex with a youth under 16 is 'carnal knowledge' - a court-martial offense. In many civilian laws, sex with anyone under 18 is 'statutory rape'.

While I agree with the sentiment, there is no mention of her being his teacher. She is a 26 year old, single mother of two.. His mother, as typical of Japanese parents, complained to the school, THEN the cops.

Which also infers that there were problems at home, as evidenced as well by his son going over to her place even after promising to stay away

Not to imply anything, yet once again, there is a hell of a lot more to this story than being shared here, (again)

Hmm, you're right, my mind must have added that part in itself. I stand corrected.

I don't know what's up with the people posting here, when I was a 16 year old and a 26year old women invited me to her house , I would be thinking , yes, this is my lucky day. Get over it guys, 16 year olds or either gender are more adventurous than you think. Most of my generation at 16 were either working or in a relationship, me I was half way to New Zealand in the Pacific ocean at 16.

No way! These are JAPANESE kids ! People here think they are all sweet and kind, naive and innocent! Don't pop their bubbles PLEASE!

Either that or everyone who is "older" is just out for sex!

I'm guessing she might be kind of hot if she was hoping to be in the "entertainment" industry, so don't blame the "kid". 16? 18? Really, what's a couple of year's difference.

Jalapeno:

Depending on the country - jail. In some, you can be 17 years, 11 months, and 30 days, but if someone over 18 has relations with you, that's kiddie rpe as kids can't legally consent. Have an issue, talk to your MP/representative to get changed, but you'll be fighting culture...and moms.

Age of consent in Japan is 13, for the National Penal Code, however the Child Welfare Act makes it 18.

But this case is not about sex, it's a claim of "kidnapping" by a mother and evidently rejected by the police.

And to you, Mrs. Robin-san. Jesus loves you more than you will know. Wo wo wo. Ya ya ya.

Was she all that and a bag of tricks? (No pun intended.)

Exactly. A single mother. A Maggie May. She keeps hounding him to come over - to play Tiddy-Winks and Pac-Man, yeah. I knew some classmates involved in such relationships when I was in HS.

Don't stand. Don't stand so.

Don't stand so close to me.

Grooming is a red flag, classic predatory behaviour.
