Police in Shibecha, Hokkaido, have arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of abusing his son, who is under the age of 10, by beating his head and chest at their home.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 11:10 pm on October 1, Sankei Shimbun reported. Koki Okamoto, a transportation worker, is accused of beating his son, then grabbing his hair and throwing him onto the sofa, Sankei Shimbun reported.
Police said child’s siblings and mother were in the room at the time. They are questioning the parents about whether the child was abused on more than one occasion.

Who reported the abuse to the authorities? The mother? The siblings? A teacher? The victim himself? That should be basic information for an article like this.
I wish JT would be more detailed in the articles authored in-house. The articles sourced from AP, Kyodo, etc always include much more detail. I realize JT is just a small company with limited resources compared to them. But, I assume JT gets the info from police press releases. Why not follow up and contact the dept for add'l info?
You could be a major player in English-language news coverage in Japan, if you'd just go the extra kilometer.

that would be the mother, protecting her children from "discipline" that has been illegal in japan for some time...
well done!!

Do you have a link to the source for that info? I'm curious to read more details.
(Or, did you just make an assumption?)

educated guess: *"a guess that is made using judgment and a particular level of knowledge and is therefore more likely to be correct"*
