The revelation comes on the heels of quality control scandals at other major Japanese firms

I for one am not surprised one bit with this news, just waiting to read about how many more there are!

This is all starting to sound like the Soviet Union, where people pretended to work and the state pretended to pay them.

This should delay any trade talks with Japan as it can't show it has any mechanisms to prevent substandard products

besides airbags, i'll take a japanese made product over a chinese made product any day of the week and twice on sundays. japanese standards for products are above and beyond most countries' standards. so even if these prodcuts are "substandard," they would still be of better quality than most countries.

Will anyone goto jail? Will anyone be fined? Governance in Japan is shocking... returning part of your salary is not a punishment!

These would be normal market reactions. One is curious whether this will play out as such here in Japan.

I think it's interetsing to compare this news with the recent article stating Japanese students among the best problem solvers. A case of the group working for the group only, unconcerned with others outside the group.

Something else  is that a few years back there was the food scandal: high class food actually being mediocre or low level food. This is unacceptable but no one really gets hurt. But these recent scandlas center around aeronautcs, heavy machinery, etc. If these fail then lives could be lost. This is an entirely different ball game. Will there be repercussions?

Now, you are spouting garbage! The term 'made in Japan' is no longer relevant. It needs to be changed to 'Assembled in Japan' or 'Produced in Japan' because all Japanese products are filled with components made in other parts of Asia and around the world. For example, there is not one LCD screen manufacturer in Japan, but there are many Japanese products that contain LCD screens.

My personal experience is with guitars. In 2008 you could buy a 'Made in Japan' Fender Stratocaster for around ¥40,000, which had very high quality 'Japanese made' pick ups, switches and controllers. The body was also made out of alder. However, it all changed dramatically in 2010 with no information to the consumer. The electrics are all the exact same cheap Chinese crap you get in a ¥10,000 guitar and the bodies are made from basswood, like the cheap Chinese guitars in the ¥10-15,000 price range. Now, the real kicker is, they have doubled in price since 2010 to ¥70-100,000. This is a good example 'Japanese quality'. It is all window dressing! Yeah, their products may look good, but the quality is only as good as the imported components that they put in them.

I notice that the trend is quality down and price up.

In my business, people seem to be ok with selling inferior or defective products - it is a worry....

As with government employees... corporate leaders and managers and their rules, policies, procedures and styles may change... but actual work is being done by employees that are "established" within the system with relationships and work culture that may not change with corporate culture established and dictated from above...

A lot has to do with "real" and "realistic" personnel evaluation and work review based upon something other than just "work hours spent", the "quantity" produced, "apparent" quality and "record-keeping" for "justification" purposes but with the "end user" in mind...

That is corporate work culture found in those who "actually meet and work with" the end-user...

Sometimes it is important that all workers that produce actually meet with the end-user/consumer/customer/client/guest...

Or the corporate work culture must first define and train those who produce... to recognize the value of their work for the end-user...
