3 teens arrested over vending machine arson

Police in Tokyo’s Katsushika Ward said Monday they have arrested three boys for torching and stealing money from a vending machine on Sept 18.

Police said they are questioning the teens -- one aged 15 and two aged 14 -- about their involvement in a total of 35 vending machines that were torched in the area near JR Kameari Station since Sept 15, TBS reported.

According to police, the three teens, who attend night school, posted a video of themselves torching a vending machine on YouTube. Police quoted them as saying they wanted money for fun.

In all cases, the fires were started by igniting a flammable liquid poured into the coin change slot. More than 130,000 yen has been stolen from the machines, police said.

However, police said there may have been more than one group involved in the arson spree.

Another stupid group of young people wanting attention. Why don't you film, upload while burning yourselves instead?

Of course its them. What are the odds of another group doing the same thing in the same area at about the same time?

Young street boys attending night school ...!!! Probably spending their day time at pachinko and game parlors ...!!!

They certainly sound like three ne'er do wells.

What are these kids doing attending night school in the first place? Do they have anything better to do during the daytime asides from torching vending machines?

Maybe some REAL jail time will fix the problem. If no harsh penalty is imposed now, next stop, nastier crimes and possible injuries and death for their intended or 'collateral damage victims'. Then again, some people are truly 'broken' and need to removed from the 'free world'.

torching a vending machine full of drinks can't be easy. they must be quite enterprising kids!

Did not know they had night school.

So, does torching the vending machine cause the lock to open by itself?

I guess they got a lot of change with ¥130,000. Paper bills burn.

130,000 yen. And how much are 35 vending machines worth? I hope they will be ordered to pay it all back from their own hard work. (Not their parents' money.)

Feel sorry for the parents.

the best punishment for these kids is to give them the bill for replacing the machines + what the owner has lost in takings, I think that will give them lots to think about next time they want to torch a vending machine

Na ah! It will just make the parents will be penalized not the idiots. The best punishment would be, to have them do lots of community services and have them work for all the damages. But I don't think it's appropriate. I just jail them rather.
