Police in Ota, Gunma Prefecture, said Friday they have arrested a 31-year-old single mother on charges of physically abusing her 2-year-old daughter.
According to police, on July 9 at around 4 p.m., Nami Kanno forcefully pushed her daughter to the floor, breaking her collarbone and causing other injuries, at the family’s apartment, Fuji TV reported. The girl's injuries took two months to heal, police said.
The case was revealed after local child welfare employees who had been suspicious of child abuse, asked police authorities to question the mother on Aug 7. On Thursday, Kanno went to police and admitted that she had abused her daughter, at which point she was arrested.
Kanno was quoted by police as saying she abused her daughter because she wasn’t obedient.
Kanno also has a one-year-old son who has been taken into protective custody.
