Police in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, have arrested a 31-year-old woman on suspicion of abandoning a corpse after she put the body of her newborn baby boy in the toilet at her apartment.

According to police, the suspect, who is from the Philippines, said she gave birth to the infant in the toilet between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Thursday and then flushed the toilet, Kyodo News reported.

On Friday, a relative who lives with the woman noticed that the toilet wasn't flushing properly and called the building maintenance office. A repair man found the remains of the infant blocking the toilet.

Police did not release any further information on the woman or who the father of the infant was.

A 31 old woman, should know better

terrible, but may point at a more systemic problem with the way things are set up in Japan.

I'm just going to stop reading the news.

Wonder if the same thing would happen if she was back in the Philippines? Recently some stories here about “interns” losing their jobs if pregnant.

I once worked as a contract employee at a large manufacturing company where there were many foreign part time and haken shain.

When it came to medical checkup,we had the checkup within the company premises and men were to go on a different day and women on a different day.I made a mistake and went on the day the women were scheduled to go.To my surprise I stumbled upon all of them undergoing pregnancy tests. Most were South East Asians from the Philippines,Vietnam etc.It was an embarrassing situation and a nurse hurriedly came and told me men were to come for medical checkup the following day.

I later learned that if the women were found to be pregnant, they would be fired.

I don't think there were any Japanese women there.

There are couples in Japan who are unable to have children and would love to adopt! Why murder a new born baby and spend the rest of your days in prison when you can simply adopt the baby out! I don't understand it.

(Japan, damn autocorrect)

The article doesn't mention if the baby was alive or stillborn. Not condoning her actions but there are many reasons that could explain why she did what she did. It's easy just to assign guilt and demand she be locked up for life. The woman clearly has mental issues and as we all know, this is the last country where that is understood let alone treated.

It's a damn shame what she (had to?) do/did. I like to give people the benefit of doubt until I'm certain of what happened. This article alone isn't sufficient.

Before you judge a man (or woman) walk a mile in his shoes.

@alongforetheride doesn’t know Japan has one of the most difficult and (because of course it does) negative preconceived notions about adoption in the world, so no, it’s not that simple.

Adoption rates in Japan are extremely low (for kids anyway). A lot of negative connotations to navigate as well like peoples “you can’t really, really love that kid, it’s not yours” nonsense. And a processing system that is of course archaic and difficult to navigate for couples willing to try. (Because only couples within a certain income bracket are even allowed to try if the kid is under 6 years old)

Hope they flush her in prison.

She needs medical help because she just gave birth.

But Japan chose to put her in jail. Very human.

Disgusting and inexcusable.

Yes only one is in Kyushu. About 20 hours by car from Tokyo.

Time and time again I catch these gut-wrenching headlines. Babies being dumped in toilets, being left in cars, being abandoned in trashcans. This woman tried to murder the baby from the moment it was born!!!

What's wrong with these women, do they have no soul? And for those of you who try to give any sympathy to such evil people, ask yourself this.

If a woman would tell you directly to your face: " Today, I'm going to flush a baby down a toilet" would you still have any sympathy or would you call the cops?

Too bad the only “Baby Hatch” in jail in KYUSHU

That's too bad for both mother and child. I hope she gets the help she needs.
