Police in Yokohama have arrested a 34-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of aggravated assault after he allegedly hugged two 16-year-old high school girls.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 4:45 p.m. on Monday inside a karaoke club located in Yokohama’s Asahi Ward. Police said Daichi Ito approached the two girls and hugged them for about 10 minutes.

Police said the girls and Ito did not know each other. Ito, who was drunk at the time, was quoted by police as saying he might have touched the girls but he doesn’t recall hugging them.

Reckless:

Isn't this typical Japanese male pick-up routine?

No.

Sure...around 97% of men talk that way.

I was thinking more like 94.55 but I’ll go with your clearly well-founded data.

I think it’s great that ‘losers’ ( very snobbish, judgmental, elitist and even discriminatory, by the way ) can be popular with women in another country. The same would apply to women not regarded as a catch in their own country being popular in another country.

No need to be a misanthrope and a snob. Let these ‘losers’ enjoy themselves.

Sure...around 97% of men talk that way. Both to people they are friends with and in striking up a conversation amongst other guys.

Nothing is wrong with getting laid. People do it all the time. There is definitely a problem with the perception of most foreign guys coming to Asia that Asian girls are easy to get into bed. Thus the websites, chatrooms, classes and the like dedicated to helping losers try to get laid in Asia.

Yes, it's most men

Would you like to be more accurate? Give us a number.

What’s wrong with wanting to find out how to get laid? I like getting laid. It’s fun. Nothing disgusting about it, but I suppose even disgusting can be fun if you are into that kind of thing.

Most guys are just disgusting to begin with. They way they talk about women amongst each other. I've overheard plenty of no-reason-to-be-full-of-yourself white guys on trains talking about this girl or that girl's body parts, etc. Nasty.

I don’t know about ‘most’. I worked in a bookmakers office when I was a university student and the filth coming from the women rivaled anything I heard from the men when I worked on a construction site. My sister is a nurse and their banter is X-rated.

Both do it. Maybe it’s more common among men. I don’t know.

I wonder what reaction a man would get if he posted something negative about women starting with ‘most women’.

I'm curious how the girls hug the guy for 10 minutes unless they enjoyed it.

I'm curious as to why some men seem to believe girls welcome sexual assaults.

@Kazuaki Shimazaki

we males can understand that the whole "freezing" scenario is a serious possibility. So you don't need to keep telling us of such factors.

Reading the comments on this story would suggest otherwise.

Well, at least the assault charge should stick - IIRC, that doesn't require suppression of will or anything like that.

Sigh.

At least as far as I am concerned, we males can understand that the whole "freezing" scenario is a serious possibility. So you don't need to keep telling us of such factors.

However, these statements are usually made in the context of requesting criminal convictions. That makes it a different story. A 40 or 60 percent chance that something was the case isn't good enough when you are asking for someone to be thrown into prison for a number of years.

And no, I am not a fan of lowering criminal conviction standards.

So girls need to make a choice. Sure, they can play it safe, but sometimes playing it safe can also lead to a worse end and they may have to settle for not convicting him or on a lesser charge, which seems to have been what happened here. Given what happened here, the case might have fulfilled the criteria for Article 176 (Forcible Indecency) but then we have that whole assault or intimidation and suppression of will factors. And there WERE two of them, which should go a long way towards the disadvantage in strength. Thus the assault charge.

Daichi Ito approached the two girls and hugged them for about 10 minutes.

Get past the drunkenness he could have been lonely, there was a homeless guy in Fukuoka McDonalds with a number of female staff who gave him a hug and a back rub - mixed age group.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

It was a win-win situation for the girls. Either he paid up and they went home with the cash, or they wait for him to pay for them to drop the charges.

Money grab pure and simple. If there were two of you, one could have run for help or opened the door and screamed while the other was being assaulted. They let it go on and on, and then accused him after he wouldn't pay up. The only victim here is the drunk guy .

How one can remain unemployed at the age of 34 in this country.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

This case, greedy girls are playing for big cash. Drunk man doesn't even know whether girls or boys or lamp post if he is really hugging for 10 mins.

Only Tetsuo the iron man can hug for such long minutes.

deer in headlights syndrome? oh and if you feel that unsafe everywhere.. get one of those alarm things or gaz canister or how about self defense classes ... must be horrid to live in constant fear all your life.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

maybe he thought they were cold and wanted to warm them up...

savethegaijin: Totally agree with your point. Pick your battles. A few unwanted touches to your breasts on the train - no big deal because you wouldn't want to have the guy(s) go nuts on you for saying something.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Don't think I have ever hugged or been hugged by anyone for 2 minutes much less ten. Were they restrained or something? The guy is obviously a creep though. There's a country full of them here but I am more worried about tourist manners.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

savethegaijin I totally agree. Especially if you think about the fact that they were in a Karaoke store. It is not specified yet where in the store they were, but they might have been in a karaoke box, suddenly this random guy comes in and hugs you....I would be scared shitless.

It is an automated reaction, scientifically called "freezing behavior" I believe.

Look I know it's probably hard to understand if you're not regularly in situations like that. Especially if you're a woman that lives in an urban environment you have to deal with unwanted and sometimes aggressive sexual harassment regularly. Just think about it logically... theres is literally no reason for a 34 year old man to come up to a 16 year old and start hugging them. He's either crazy, which is potentially dangerous, or is a sexual deviant, which is also potentially very dangerous. If I were these girls I probably would have done the same thing. A 10 minute hug from an insane person is better than getting my throat slashed.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

They were probably just scared and were hoping he would eventually go away. I know this is still hard for some people to understand but if you are at a physical disadvantage and/or are unsure of the mental state of someone coming at you, sometimes the safest thing you can do (at least what might feel the safest at the time) is to just be as polite as possible and let them do what they're going to do. Sometimes fighting back can get you killed.

Once in a while I have to entertain the ramblings of this middle aged guy who walks around our neighborhood because he catches me when I'm walking home. Clearly he's got a mental issue and in a perfect world I could tell him to leave me alone, that he's scarring me and I don't walk him to talk to me anymore. But I don't know what he would do if I said that. Crazy people snap all the time and I don't want to get stabbed because I didn't smile and nod while he talked about his dog that died 30 years ago every week. I'm a reasonably athletic person but I'm only 5'3 and he could easily overpower me if he wanted to.

Why is this so impossible for people to understand? Nearly all men can physically overpower nearly all women, full stop. So yeah, sometimes women have to pick their battles to protect themselves. Sometimes we have to sacrifice sticking up for ourselves just to stay safe. Deal with it and stop blaming women for not wanting to escalate an already potentially dangerous situation.

10 mins?!? 20 seconds and its crossing the border of weird! That's GOTTA be some kind of record! Also, didn't either of the girls try to move or break free?

I know the "victim blaming" comments will come out, but nobody hugs for 10 minutes unless they want to hug for 10 minutes. They weren't being forced to hug via gun/knife, hostage situation, etc. So seems a bit odd.
